2015 Château Saint-Roch "Chimères" Côtes du Roussillon-Villages

SKU #1358793 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Giving up jammy notes of black raspberries, licorice, smoked herbs and chocolate, the 2015 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Chimeres (aged in demi-muid and concrete vates) needs to be snatched up by savvy readers. Full-bodied, deep and layered with incredible texture, I actually called this a mini SQN. I would gladly pay three to four times the going rate. Bravo! (JD) (4/2017)

K&L Notes

A blend of 40% Black Grenache, 30% Carignan, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre.

What a great southern French red! Fresh, expressive, and with excellent purity, it greets the nose with wonderful aromas of wildflowers, raspberries, and wet slate. A full-bodied Roussillon, it carries its weight well thanks to a solid core of acidity that keeps things lively from the first sip to the last. On the palate, it reveals flavors of bramble, raspberry, anise seed, and a hint of red pepper spice. When given a chance to evolve in the glass secondary flavors of earth and porcini mushroom emerge rounding out an already beautiful presentation. In the under $20 category, you simply won't do much better than this gorgeous, ready-to-drink 2015.

There is no shortage of fans of Jean-Marc Lafage's wines here at K&L and I happen to be in that camp. The Chimeres is robust, full bodied and long on the palate with its meaty smoky brambly black fruit and roasted mineral notes. It is classic Roussillon. This wine will deliver for hours in the glass and maybe even a few extra days in the bottle if you don't finish it right away. Never a problem though at my house when Lafage is behind the winemaking.

Sourced from just outside the village of Maury, I was struck by the gorgeous nose on this wine. Highly aromatic with blackberry, wet stone, and gamey notes. I love that the wine strikes a more balanced medium body, with such a dark fruit profile. It makes for a more balanced wine. The palate has elements of blackberry compote, minerality and a slight garrigue/tobacco note, with a unsweetened chocolate component at the finish. Not an ounce of tannin on this wine, it will show perfectly right out of the bottle. A tick darker and more concentrated than the Bastide Miraflors, this is another brilliant wine from Lafage.

This is an unreal value in Cotes du Roussillon, with equal parts lush, perfumed Grenache and bright, high toned Carignane, rounded by smoky, gamey Syrah and deep, garrigue laden Mourvèdre. The distinctive black schist soils on which the vines of Saint Roch are planted impart an intensely mineral character to the full bodied, luxurious palate. Black fruit abounds, with aromas and flavors of lavender, strawberry preserves, stewed plum and black pepper, and a bright acidity throughout drives the finish home.

This is an absolute beauty! The nose is intoxicating with aromas of dark chocolate, spice, earth, fresh-picked blackberries and subtle dried herb notes. The palate is alive with fresh black and red fruits as well as chocolate, clove and oak notes. Easy to drink this is a steal for under $15.
Top Value! Drink from 2018 to 2022

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.
