2017 Alter Ego de Palmer, Margaux (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1357301 92-93 points James Suckling

This shows excellent body and depth of fruit. Rich and very deep. Layered and flavorful. Solid and chewy. Serious second wine. (4/2018)

91-93 points Wine Enthusiast

Soft and silky, this is a rounded, ripe wine. It has just enough gentle tannins to sustain the generous black fruits and acidity. This is going to be a ripe, fruity wine as it develops. Drink from 2022. (RV) (4/2018)

92 points Jeb Dunnuck

The 2017 Alter Ego De Palmer is a terrific wine and checks in as 53% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Petit Verdot. Its deep purple color is followed by a powerful second wine that has lots of blackberry and assorted dark fruit as well as notes of leafy herbs, earth, and spice. it's nicely concentrated, medium to full-bodied, and has considerable class. (2/2020)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Composed of 53% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Alter Ego de Palmer is deep garnet-purple in color and springs from the glass with vivacious black raspberries, black cherries and crushed blackcurrants notes plus hints of Sichuan pepper, menthol, pencil lead and cardamom. Medium-bodied, the palate is charged with energy, featuring expressive, bright black fruits and firm, fine-grained tannins, finishing long and lively. (LPB) (3/2020)

92 points Vinous

The 2017 Alter Ego is pliant, textured and supple. Expressive floral notes add inner perfume and freshness to a core of dark red berry fruit, mocha, new leather, spice and menthol. A wine of striking textural richness, Alter Ago also remains light on its feet and wonderfully nuanced. The 13% alcohol, low by present-day standards, adds to a feeling of freshness. (AG) (3/2020)

91 points Decanter

The blends for the grand vin and second wine are similar this year. This is carefully presented, accomplished and precise, with fresh mint and peony notes on the nose followed by bright and vibrant black fruit flavours. It's extremely pretty, with some lovely floral notes. (JA) (4/2018)

Jancis Robinson

53% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot. Harvested 20–29 September. Inky black colour. Delicate and super-pure dark fruit, Dark and savoury on the palate, rich and deep in savoury black fruit. Very smooth but with attractive density, smooth and dark and very long. Elegant and flowing across the palate. 17/20 points (JH) (4/2018)

K&L Notes

90 points Neal Martin for Vinous: The 2017 Alter Ego was bottled a little later than others at the end of August 2019. Deep garnet in colour, it has a refined bouquet with blackberry, cedar, crushed violets, hints of orange pith and incense, all very well defined but understated. The palate is medium-bodied with a lightly spiced entry. Fine tannins, a little compact being so close to bottling, yet it displays the tension and focus that I observed out of barrel with an attractive marine influence on the aftertaste. (02/2020)

I tell customers all the time that the very best tasting wine in all of Bordeaux in the last 10 years for the money is without question Alter Ego de Palmer. The 2017 is 53% Merlot 41% CS and 6%PV Really lovely, grapey black fruit and very zesty and lively all across the palate to the finish. The 17's at Palmer like so many wines in 2017 are precise, forward and lower in alcohol. 9,000 cases produced. Very nice wine! Ralph Sands
