2016 Carlisle "Palisades Vineyard" Napa Valley Petite Sirah

SKU #1356790 97 points Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark One hundred percent Petite Sirah from vines planted in 1968, the 2016 Petite Sirah Palisade Vineyard is very deep purple-black in color with very pretty notes of lilacs, black and red cherries, mulberries and sandalwood with hints of menthol and fragrant earth. Full-bodied, refreshing and elegant, it has a gorgeous texture of firm, fine-grained tannins and tons of perfumed black fruit layers, finishing long and minerally. (LPB) Inner quote mark (6/2018)

Outer quote mark A wine that spent a full 52 days on skins, the 2016 Petite Sirah Palisades Vineyard is 100% varietal and aged 16 months in 28% new French oak. Liquid blackberries, plums, blueberries, spice, and hints of scorched earth all flow to a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, beautifully pure, elegant Petite Sirah that has sweet tannin, superb purity of fruit, and a big finish. Outer quote mark The 2016 Petite Sirah Palisades Vineyard is one of the better wines of this highly regarded Napa Valley site. Rich, powerful and explosive on the palate, the 2016 is loaded with character. Beams of tannin and acid enshroud a core of dark Petite fruit. The Petite tannins are present, but also very nicely tamed. This is an exceptional wine from Carlisle. The two lots, both entirely destemmed, spent 46 and 57 days on the skins respectively. (AG) Inner quote mark (4/2018)

Outer quote mark Spirited, dark and potent, yet polished, with blackberry, smoky anise and licorice flavors that build speed toward big but refined tannins. (TF) Inner quote mark (5/2018)

Palisades Vineyard in Calistoga is the premiere site in Napa for Petite Sirah, where It's Northwest exposure ensures deep pigment and fruit development inherent to the varietal. Carlisle's 2016 bottling showcases the best characteristics of old vine Petit Sirah, with deep, sensuous aromas and flavors of violet and rose petal, ripe blueberry and raspberry coulis. Truly the epitome of balance, this wine is medium bodied with firm, fine tannins, beautifully integrated acidity, a kiss of barrel spice, and a dense, stony minerality.

One of the secrets to making great Petite Sirah is the winemakers ability to tame the tannins. Once known as producing fiercely tannic wines, the new wave of better Petite Sirah’s feature both the intense dark fruit the wine is renowned for but framed by firm but ripe and elegant tannins. It’s this structure that makes Petite Sirah so engaging and such a barbeque favorite. The very talented Mike Officer has once again crafted a stunning Petite that is anything but petite but is such a pleasure to drink. This wine won over our entire tasting staff and generated quite a bit of enthusiasm and buzz.

Chardonnay has Le Montrachet, Pinot Noir has Romanée-Conti, Cabernet has the deep gravels of Chateau Latour. If I were to think of the most iconic vineyard for Petite Sirah it would have to be Palisades. I believe this to be the foremost planting of the varietal on the planet. Organic, head-trained, dry-farmed vines planted back in 1968 produce this intense, inky wine. Fragrant lilacs and black roses lift from the glass. The wine is full to the brim with concentrated black and blue fruit, huckleberry, bramble and black cherry. Big saturated texture coats the palate; the tannins are ample but not overbearing or aggressive. This is Petite Sirah you drink not chew! No jammy characters or sweetness, just pure dark fruit and refined tannic power. Very impressive wine. Drink now with juicy smoked brisket or put it away in the cellar for 10+ years.

It's been awhile since I've had a Petite Sirah this engaging. Often the wines have skull crushing tannins and a density that says, come back in a few years and maybe I'll be ready. The beauty of this Petite Sirah though is it has the density but those tannins are beautifully managed. All that deep dark purple fruit blasts forward with notes of boysenberry, lavendar and a touch of incense. This is gorgeous Petite and worthy of a bottle or two from this special producer for drinking or short term cellaring.

There is no doubt about the pedigree of Palisades Petite Sirah, and boy does it show in this bottle of wine. Loads of dark and blue skinned fruit aromas, with additional notes of graphite and dried tangerine peel , lead to a palate that is broadly structured, vertical, mineral and stacked. It's a real mouthful of wine that does not lack detail or drinkability - now, later, and many, many years later. Strongly recommended heirloom Napa vineyard based wine for your cellar!

The nose of this wine is full of a savory richness, there’s fruit in there but this isn’t a fruit bomb. On the palate this wine has real depth, texturally solid, focused this isn’t a flabby sweetish wine it has character and shows layers of potential development. Lots of dark fruit lie just below the surface and will blossom with a bit more time, the wine has excellent tannic structure without being gritty or grippy which bodes well for the future. The finish shows lots of balance, lift and direction while the savory flavors dominate, an excellent wine.
Drink from 2019 to 2030
