2015 Hacienda Monasterio Ribera del Duero

 Made with guidance from Peter Sisseck, the 2015 Crianza from Hacienda Monasterio is a blockbuster effort that’s a blend of 75% Tinto Fino, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Merlot, all of which spent 18 months in 30% new French oak. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by terrific notes of blueberries, violets, graphite, and crushed rocks. Full-bodied, deep, concentrated, and elegant, with a traditional style and building tannin, it’s incredible that they produce upward of 30,000 cases of this beauty. It’s no doubt beautiful today yet will keep for a decade or more. Even at $50, it’s a smoking value!  (2/2018)

 The flagship Crianza is now simply referred to as 2015 Hacienda Monasterio. This is their biggest production, with some 181,630 bottles in this classical and powerful vintage where the secret was an early harvest to keep the acidity and freshness in the wine and keep the alcoholic degree under control. It's mostly Tempranillo, with 10% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, fermented with indigenous yeasts and with long and soft macerations. It matured for some 18 months in French oak barrels, 25% of them new (a percentage that has been gradually lowered in the last few years). It has a balanced nose, with nuance and subtleness, with the oak nicely folded into the fruit, incipient perfume, and even if young, you can almost see where it can go in bottle. The foreign varieties are not really noticed; they are very integrated. The palate has terrific balance and refined tannins. There is no heat or excess ripening whatsoever. For a moment, I thought I was tasting the 2014. This is one of the best and most widely available wines from Ribera del Duero. It should evolve nicely in bottle.  (8/2018)

The nose of this wine says refined from the beginning, layers of mineral, sweet dark cherry, swirls of vanilla bound from the glass. On the palate you find this is a powerful wine, sweet, polished tannins roll across your tongue blossoming into lustrous rich fruit. I’m not a fan of American oak but this is all French oak and it really gives the wine a polish and elegance without becoming the dominant flavor. Full bodied and focused this wine gives you the best of Tempranillo while adding hints of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. I really liked this wine’s polish, focus and elegant flavors.

Aromas of blue and red fruits meld with fine French vanilla and lead to a palate that's deep with concentrated blackberry, a fine minerality, and hints of leather. It is a deep, rich, and refined Ribera that is immediately attractive but also will be a joy to follow over the years. There is a ton of structure here and a lot to like. For serious Ribera del Duero at this kind of price point, it is hard to go wrong with Hacienda Monasterio. The 2015 is another towering success. Drink now with a short decant or enjoy anytime over the next fifteen years.

For Peter Sisseck, famous producer of Dominio del Pingus (yes, the $800+ dollar a bottle Pingus), Hacienda Monasterio is actually the winery which first brought him to Spain some 25 years ago. "El Pingus" himself still makes the wines here. This fact combined with the vines' prime location in Pesquers de Duero usually results in very good wines, but in 2014 and now 2015, we have a couple of back to back heavy hitters. The fruit profile, while rich, has the requisite amount of freshness, and a clean chalky quality towards the finish. I'm with the critics on this one: Hacienda Monasterio is definitely one of the Ribera del Duero region's best and most reliable names. Fantastic stuff for Spanish wine fans and, given the richness and polish of this wine, for Napa cab drinkers as well.

Lovely, deep fruit dominates here, but it's not accompanied by the ripe mouthfeel you'd expect with so much fruit quality. It's lifted and fresh, with more weight on the front palate. This wine is something different and unique and a fun blend of the unexpected. What a perfect wine to taste your friends on when you're bored of the usual Cab or Merlot.

Tempranillo

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penèdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.
