K&L Notes

Domaine Petroni is an estate on the eastern side of Corsica near Lake Diane. Lake Diane is a famous lagoon, where the local aquaculture produces gorgeous oysters and mussels. Now run by the Ramazotti brothers, this idyllic location overlooks the Mediterranean with its vineyards composed of sandy and clay soils. The rouge is a blend of 50% Niellucciu, 35% Syrah, and 15% Grenache. Grapes are fermented in concrete tanks and aged 12 months in stainless steel to preserve the fresh fruit-driven aspects of the wine.

The Petroni Rouge has become a favorite go-to wine from the south of France. I always equate the reds in Corsica as Italian flavors with French sensibility and it stands to reason because Nielucciu is a cousin or nephew or some such relation to Tuscany's Sangiovese. And... the 2017 Petroni has maybe the most influence I have yet seen from that profile. A touch more medium bodied than the 2016, this has the red fruit, dust and spice you might find in a great Rosso di Montalcino. Now, this has a little grenache and syrah in it, which round out that French sensibility, lending flavors of dried strawberries, potpourri and garrigue. But as any Corsican will tell you... This is all Corsica! Yeah, don't get them mad.
