2014 TWR (Te Whare Ra) "SV5182 - Single Vineyard" Pinot Noir Marlborough

SKU #1355669 96 points James Suckling

A sense of depth of fruit with astute winemaking here. Deeply ripe red and black cherries sit amid violets and fresh, lightly earthy notes. The palate has bright, lithe and juicy red cherries with some forest-floor, woody and leafy notes. Fine but sturdy tannins and a subtly spicy finish. Super length. Drink or hold. Screw cap. *#16 Top 100 New Zealand Wines 2018* (10/2018)

The wine shows a great degree of elegance as well as complexity and intensity; the seductively expressed bouquet shows spiced cherry, dark plum, game, dried herb, olive and almond characters, leading to a concentrated palate that is refined and sophisticated, offering sensual, flowing mouthfeel. Precise and multi-layered at the same time, the wine delivers hedonistic fragrance and a persistent engaging finish. (12/2018)

Even, dark-hued garnet-red colour, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is soft and fragrant with ethereal aromas of soft-red cherry fruit with nuances of black-berried fruits at the core, unfolding an array of dark-red florals with a subtle complexing amalgam of dark and dried herbs. The aromatics are harmoniously presented. Medium-full bodied, the palate is elegantly proportioned with sweetly rich flavours of soft red berry fruits and nuances of black fruits, with dark and dried herbs and an array of red florals. The fruit is luscious and enlivened by fine, lacy acidity and supported by a very finely extracted and structured line that carries the wine to a lingering, ethereal finish. This is a very elegant, but lusciously rich red cherry and dark-berried Pinot Noir with ethereal florals on a fine-structured palate with fresh, lacy acidity. Match with poultry and pork dishes over the next 5+ years. The second release of a Pinot Noir under the 'SV 5182' designation. A blend of 8 clones, 113, 114, 115, 667, 777, 10/5, Abel and 5 from the TWR ''Home' block, the fruit hand-picked and hand-sorted, destemmed and fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine spending 10-14 days on skins post-ferment and aged 11 months in 30% new French oak. 5 Stars from Raymond Chan. The 2014 Single Vineyard 5182 Pinot Noir comes off the estate vineyard adjoining the winery. It shows complex aromas that range from earth and compost to sous-bois and ripe cherries. The oak influence is understated but noticeable in the way this medium-bodied wine glides easily across the palate, guided by smooth, silky tannins into a long finish. (JC) (3/2019)

K&L Notes

Lisa Perrotti-Brown writes: "Owned by winemakers Anna and Jason Flowerday, Te Whare Ra (TWR) is a small vineyard/winery located in the Marlborough sub-region of Renwick. The 11 hectare vineyard is planted to 7 different varieties and was first established in 1979. The vineyard is managed with a combination of organic and biodynamic practices and both winery and vineyard are both fully certified organic with BioGro NZ. The Chardonnay and Riesling “D” (dry) are particularly exciting, though the Pinot Noir has a lot of character and potential too." *biodynamic, organic*

This has some serious complexity and drive behind it. The blend of clones from all estate fruit adds nuance of flavor including red and black fruits, dried herb, and dusty tannin. The BioGro number SV5182 is essentially a zip code for the vineyard, allowing transparency in the origin and farming of the fruit, all-important factors for these biodynamically dedicated farmers.
