2017 Brane-Cantenac, Margaux (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1355642 94-96 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark While the wood flavors are palpable in this wine, so are the firm tannins and dense black fruit. These elements suggest a wine that will have power and great concentration while also generous blackberry fruits. (RV) Inner quote mark (4/2018)

94 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark A tight, focused center palate to this red with blackberries, dark chocolate, hazelnuts and smoke. Medium to full body, polished tannins and a juicy, lightly chewy mouthfeel. A blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Inner quote mark (1/2020)

93 points Decanter

Outer quote mark A lovely wine that sits extremely prettily though the palate, with a seductive expression of florality and blackberry fruits. It's not as powerful as the past two years, but is skilfully worked with soft grilled oak notes. It doesn't sacrifice the excellent quality that this estate has been producing. (JA) Inner quote mark (4/2018)

92 points Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Brane-Cantenac starts off a tad restrained and reluctant to show, opening out to notes of baked blackberries, plum preserves and crème de cassis with hints of cigar box and tar. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is wearing a lot of muscular fruit with firm, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing with great length. Needs time! (LPB) 92+ Inner quote mark (3/2020)

Outer quote mark The 2017 Château Brane-Cantenac should be a terrific wine and offers a medium-bodied, nicely concentrated, silky, elegant style. Loads of black raspberries, cedar pencil, and dried flower notes as well as sweet fruit, ripe tannin, and a complex, layered texture make for a classic Margaux that’s going to drink nicely for two decades. Inner quote mark (4/2018)

91 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2017 Brane-Cantenac has a typical Pauillac inspired bouquet with scents of clove and undergrowth infusing the black fruit. It is not the most powerful bouquet in recent years but it feels fresh and typical of the property. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, well judged acidity, pretty with tart red berry fruit, judicious sprinkling of spice with a sappy, classically styled finish. It will be an easier drinking Brane-Cantenac that could be broached after four or five years. (NM) Inner quote mark (2/2020)

88-91 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark A light singed alder hint leads the way here, along with light bay leaf and savory notes, while the core of gently steeped black cherry and plum fruit fills in slowly. Shows modest intensity through the finish but the flavors knit nicely. (JM) Inner quote mark (4/2018)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Deep crimson. Complex aroma that pulls together black olive as well as sweet spice and cassis leaf and fruit. Creamy texture, nicely balanced, lightish and elegant with a juicy finish. (JH) Inner quote mark (4/2018)

K&L Notes

91 points Antonio Galloni for Vinous: "The 2017 Brane-Cantenac is a pretty wine that emphasizes persistence over volume. Medium in body, with good depth, the 2017 is attractive, and yet it remains a bit compact and slender in feel. It will be interesting to see if it gains a bit more volume with time in bottle, although I don't see that happening. Just is it did en primeur, the 2017 is marked by strong Cabernet signatures in its flavor profile, textural feel and overall energy. 91+" (03/2020)

Consistent with Brane Cantenac's recent successes, the 2017 is showing absolutely lovely in barrel samples. Elegant and silken classic Margaux with lovely pure and vibrant fruit. Nicely structured for ageing a decade or two, I'm definitely putting some of this into my cellar!

2017 Brane is 55% CS 40% Merlot 5CF, if you are looking for the epitome of elegance from Margaux, Brane is always your wine! Brane never wavers from its extremely pure red fruit driven style. Always so fresh and vibrant, and it is indeed again in 2017. Ralph Sands
