2015 Band of Vintners "Consortium" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1353343 91 points Decanter

This warm, dry year was a fantastic vintage in Napa, and this wine has a rich spiciness, a soft and silky texture and polished tannins. It’s ready to drink now, but can age, too. (EM) (7/2018)

K&L Notes

The Band of Vintners are a group of Napa Valley friends with more than four decades of diversified wine-making knowledge and experience. Wanting to make high-quality wines that are both delicious and affordable, they pooled their collective resources and talents. Winemaker's Notes: "2015 produced wines that are consistent with what one would expect from a warm, dry year in Napa. The wine is approachable in its youth due to its fruit forwardness, but has the density and structure, due to the low yields in the vineyard, to age for an additional five to ten years to allow for its Cabernet nuances and complexities to reveal themselves. Varietal Blend: 93% Cabernet, 4% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc.Aging: 15 months in French Oak."

Consortium comes from a "Band of Vintners" in Napa Valley, a group of seven wine industry insiders in Napa Valley who know their fruit. The result of their collaboration is a wonderfully crafted balance of Old and New World, highlighting their understanding of the region's wine and history. The nose is complex, with hints of ripe fruit, but with a slightly gamey undertone. Aromas of clove, cinnamon, red currant, black cherry, burnt orange peel and star anise come next. The palate, though predictably lush and dark fruit forward, has an unmistakable grilled green poblano note, a tribute to classic old-world Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine finishes big, with opulent gourmet spice, and mouth-gripping tannins.

A project embarked upon by seven different wine industry professionals, this is the latest version of their flagship wine. Consortium, which is comprised of over 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% other Bordeaux varietals, invites you with a pretty nose of dark fruits, violet, hay, and dried herbs. On the palate, the flavors of plums, blackberry, and currants are ripe and fruit-forward but are followed by a silky tannin structure and lift of acidity. A great example of a wine that is delicious in its youth, but will only get better as time passes. This is easily one of the best Domestic Cabernet Sauvignon offerings for under $50 in store
