2017 Zudugarai "Amats" Getariako Txakolina (end of vintage)

SKU #1352812

Last of the vintage Amats is both the brand name of the Txakoli as well as one of Zudugarai's vineyards. It's a beautiful vineyard, a sandy substrate covered in naturally growing green cover between the rows, with the Cantabrian Sea in full view to the north. Produced from Hondarribi Zuri grapes, this is classic Txakoli: zippy, crisp, tart green apple flavors are enlivened by a lovely sparkle from the CO2 retained in tank during fermentation. Try this refreshing, vibrant, low in alcohol white wine with a wide range of foods, from obvious choices such as seafood (grilled sardines or cured anchovies would be a few of my favorites) to more substantial fare. Of course, I would not argue with this wine being serve as an aperitive as well! (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish wine buyer)

If you haven't yet had a Txakoli wine, you are in for a treat! This lightly effervescent, tangy, mineral-driven white is the perfect accompaniment to salty cheeses, roasted almonds and savory tapas. A bit unexpected at first, this wine is a treat once you get to know it. We were lucky enough to find Zudugarai Amats to import directly from Spain, and have this as an exclusive to K&L.

There is absolutely no reason to NOT have a bottle of this in your fridge ready to go at all times. It's affordable, delicious, interesting but so easy to drink. If you find yourself chugging Vinho Verde, but you're craving something slightly more adult. This is the wine for you. The zippy little stream of fizz and the bracing minerality are exactly what you need on a hot summer day. Throw some tapas at it and you'll need be reaching for another bottle before you know it.

Vinho Verde is a great summer go-to but every now and then your palate just wants to take it up a notch. That’s where Txakoli steps in! Crisp, bright and effervescent like a vinho verde but with more acidity, more bubbles and more complexity! And the Amats is exactly what one should expect from a high quality Txakoli. The tremendous amounts of bright lime and numerous little tiny bubbles that fill your glass is what makes this the perfect crisp white wine to enjoy for those perfect hot summer days and nights!

I remember visiting this property several years ago with Spanish buyer Joe Manekin and was immediately taken with the zesty and vibrant nature of the wine. In the evening, we wandered among the pintxo bars in San Sebastian and tasted many Txakolis and Sidres along the way but the "Amats" always ranked as one of my favorites. I'm always happy when a new vintage arrives and I can pound my glass on the table Baque-style sipping this crunchy wine with a little bacalao omelette, some grilled sardines and sheep's-milk cheeses.

A perennial favorite here at K&L, and back just in time for summer. Citrus and granny smith apple notes play with a salty sea breeze quality. On the palate, the wine is zesty and spritzy, perfect for any summer party. Lemon and grapefruit flavors are present along with mineral and savory tertiary characteristics. This is a quintessential seafood wine; try with oysters, clams, or mussels. And at a $15 price point? Easily one of our best values in store. Delicious!
