2014 Kapcsandy "Roberta’s Reserve - State Lane Vineyard" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

SKU #1352758 98 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Love this Merlot. Violets, roses, incense, and currants come to the fore on the nose. Full body and ultra-fine tannins that are so polished and integrated they become seamless and incredibly beautiful. Long and flavorful finish. Drink or hold. Long life ahead but who can wait? Outer quote mark Made from 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, the deep ruby/purple-colored 2014 Merlot Roberta's Reserve is another terrific Merlot, and my money is on it being the best example of this variety in the Valley. Blackberries, dried herbs, earth, and loads of chocolate give way to a full-bodied, opulent 2014 that has silky tannin, incredible purity and a great, great finish. It too will keep for 15-20 years. Outer quote mark The 2014 Merlot Roberta’s Reserve, composed of 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, has a deep garnet-purple color and is scented of warm plums, baked blackberries and blueberry pie with suggestions of spice cake, violets and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, rich, opulent and seductive in the mouth, it has mouth-filling black and blue fruit with oodles of exotic spices, framed by velvety tannins and great freshness, finishing long. Drink through 2039. (LPB) Inner quote mark (12/2017)

96 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2014 Roberta's Reserve comes across as quite soft and sensual in this vintage, with less of the drive that is such a signature of the other wines here. This is the only 2014 at Kapcsándy that has not grown meaningfully since I last tasted it. Then again, Merlot is a quirky grape, as it often goes through unpredictable periods of being closed, especially in the early going. Today, my impression is that the 2014 will drink well with minimal cellaring, but it has less structure than some of the surrounding vintages as well as the other 2014s. This is an especially laid back, almost translucent wine from Kapcsándy. It will be interesting to see what the future brings. A dollop (3%) of Cabernet Franc rounds out the blend. Outer quote mark Alluring, complex scents of black raspberry, plum, licorice, bitter chocolate and Provençal herbs. Wonderfully refined wine with crushed dark berry and menthol flavors accented by herbs and a floral nuance; the fruit shows a briary, almost inky character. Very tight in the early going--even a bit youthfully stunted, but has all the elements for extended bottle aging. Finishes very long, savory and dry, with a serious spine of granular tannins. (14.4% alcohol; 70% new French, 25% second-fill French and 5% new Hungarian oak; the late Denis Malbec made the '14s but did not bottle them). Drink through 2038. (ST) 94+ Inner quote mark (6/2019)

The very pinnacle of Merlot. My original tasting notes say, "Wow, wow, wow!" And that is putting it mildly. Wet stone and gravel greet the nose and are immediately followed by a rush of sweet, ripe fruit (raspberry, Bing cherry, cassis, and blueberry) and wonderful spice. Elegantly perfumed and with an approach that is seamless, it is a wine that draws you back to the glass again and again. Lou Kapcsandy has crafted here one of the very best wines of the 2014 vintage. I suppose you could lay this beauty down for several years, but then, why wait? It is impossible to resist now. A desert island wine, if there ever was one.

Tasted at the estate with Lou. One of the greatest wines of a trip that included some serious Napa elite. Soft but intense, fleshy, and extremely expressive, there is amazing juicy acidity that brings forward purple and black fruits supported by incredible texture and waves of flavor. Deep, complex, and nearly the perfect amounts of everything, it was stunning for me and everyone sitting around the table. Lou said he meant it to rival the Petrus/Pin/Massetos of the world, and the 2014 does that easily. I'll remember this one for a long time to come. Literally impossible to resist now, a few years in the cellar will help all the same and it will be compelling for twenty years or more.
