 The 2016 Chablis 1er Cru Vaulorent is superb, unfurling in the glass with notes of fresh peach, iodine and salty oystershells. On the palate, it's full-bodied, glossy and concentrated, with excellent tension and stony depth at the core, concluding with a precise, subtly spiced finish. It gets my vote as the finest of Drouin's premiers crus in 2016. (WK)  (8/2018)

 (began in 20% oak; these vines were not frosted): Hazy light yellow-green. Fruit-driven aromas of lemon, lime, mandarin orange and spices, plus an exotic whiff of mango. Dense, dry and classic, in fact a bit youthfully taut, offering lovely tension and purity to its citrus and spice flavors. Spreads out and vibrates on the long aftertaste. The crop level here was a healthy 50 hectoliters per hectare, according to Droin. (ST)  (8/2017)

 Reduction presently flattens the underlying fruit. More positively there is excellent richness to the borderline lush medium-bodied flavors that possess good if not excellent vibrancy before terminating in a smoky, sappy, complex and solidly persistent finish. - It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine. Surprisingly, though, what you get when you buy Chardonnay can differ greatly from country to country and even within one country, depending on the climate where it's grown and how it is vinified and aged. From fresh, crisp and minerally with apple and lemon notes to rich and buttery with tropical fruit overtones, Chardonnay runs the gamut. In France's Burgundy, Chardonnay is the source of the prized wines of Chablis, Corton-Charlemagne, M√Ęcon, Meursault and Montrachet.
