2015 Casa Beade "Ribeiras de Armea" VdT Betanzos

SKU #1351632 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2015 Ribeiras de Armea is a blend of 60% Branco Lexítimo (Albarín Blanco) and 20% each of Agudelo (Chenin Blanc) and Godello from Vino de la Tierra Betanzos, an IGP of Galicia. The vines range between ten and 30 years of age and are planted on clay and schist soils. Two-thirds of the volume is fermented in stainless steel and the rest in used 500-liter barrels, all with indigenous yeasts. The wine is kept in each of the fermentation vessels for nine months, after which it is blended and bottled. Branco Lexítimo has such a strong character that in other blends I've seen it tend to dominate the nose, texture and flavors with its sharp, mineral character. Here it is subtly floral but comes through as austere, earthy and very tasty and fresh. In a vintage like 2015 the wine feels very balanced and with all that is needed for a positive development in bottle. 1,700 bottles and 120 magnums were filled in August 2016. (8/2017)

K&L Notes

This is a super interesting blend from the northernmost area of Galicia, almost more apple than grape country. Here José Luis Beade can be found daily in his vineyards, inherited from his grandfather, doing the necessary hard work in this humid and extreme viticultural area. Branco lexitimo (also known as Albarín), Agudelo and Godello combine in this lively, bright, acid forward white wine. As with some of our other favorite Galician whites, it's a slice of the Loire Valley in northern Spain: fresh flavors, high acidity, low alcohol and loads of character!
