2010 Lealtanza Gran Reserva Rioja

SKU #1351600 92 points Vinous

Lurid ruby. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe cherry, smoked meat, vanilla and floral pastilles, and a succulent herb nuance emerges as the wine opens up. Juicy and seamless in texture, offering juicy cherry cola, candied rose and mocha flavors that are firmed by a spine of tangy acidity. Concentrated but lively as well, showing excellent delineation and spicy cut on the lingering, gently tannic finish. (JR) (2/2019)

91 points James Suckling

Some earthy and meaty aromas here with some herbs across dark chocolate and dark berries. The palate is smoothly delivered on layers of fine, even-paced tannins. Nice length here. (2/2018)

91 points Wine Enthusiast

Soft, ripe aromas of cassis, raisin and buttery oak are easygoing and not too demanding. An elastic feel is derived from rubbery tannins, while this tastes of saucy plum and berry fruits as well as savory oak. The finish on this gran reserva delivers more of the same flavors, with notes of herbs and spice. Drink through 2025. (MS) (4/2019)

Jancis Robinson

Woody spice, malt and roast plums on the nose with a very light undertow of animal/gaminess. Refined, mellow tannins melting into warm-spiced fig and damson fruit. There's a really elegant tang and lift through the core bringing freshness and length to the finish. A sense of sap rising through the veins of this wine but the overarching impression is one of beautiful refinement. 17/20 points. (TC) (11/2018)

K&L Notes

Produced from 100% Tempranillo on their estate vineyards in Fuenmayor (Rioja Alta), this is a terrific Gran Reserva from the excellent 2010 vintage. Lealtanza began operations with a strong focus on the Reserva and Gran Reserva programs, which shows in the quality and value of this bottling.

Additional Information:

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penèdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.

- With more land under vine than any other country in the world, Spain is the great sleeping wine giant. In recent years, a great deal of money and passion has been poured in the burgeoning Spanish wine industry, helping to improve quality among its vast array of wines from sparkling Cava to Sherry to Rioja Gran Reserva. The most important red-wine-producing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra in the north and Priorat and Penedes in the northeast.
