Old Forester K&L Exclusive Single Barrel #3650 (7th Floor, Warehouse B) Straight Kentucky Bourbon Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1351401

The final cask from our selection last October at the old factory on the outskirts of Louisville. I've always wondered why Brown-Forman kept this special place all hidden away from the public since it's so close to one of the most important Bourbon capitals and there are no big public distilleries around. I suppose they want push us toward the polished Woodford facility outside Lexington because the Old Forester distillery is anything but polished. The sense of history and authenticity is second to none in the great Bluegrass state. They're also making serious amounts of REALLY good bourbon here and the patent warehouses mean that they're getting great maturity in a relatively short amount of time. The Old Forester brand is on fire right now with a renewed interest in Kentucky, owners Brown-Forman have done a lot of things right. Letting us see the beautiful facility to pick casks in their historic rickhouses is definitely one of them. This lovely cask was aged atop warehouse B and is certainly on the spicy side of things. It doesn't show a big varnishy note that the Shively plant is sometimes associated with, but there is a great deal of cigar box and savory influence on the nose. The richest of the three casks we selected that day, with big dark roasted coffee bean note is softened by an almost caramelized demerara quality. Chewy salt water taffy, nutty toffee and a long woodsy exotic spice quality taking hold through the dry and delicious finish.

I am continually impressed with the Old Forester line, across the board they are lovely go to well priced and easy to drink whiskeys. I especially love when we get single barrel's from them because they are always wonderful for their cost. This one follows that line with creamy vanilla pudding on the nose with notes of Christmas spice. A surprisingly light and delicate mouthfeel that becomes stronger and spicier as it moves to the finish. Just a delightful bottle of bourbon.

This is a pretty and delicate Bourbon. It is on the light side, soft ,easy and nuanced. Vanilla and sweet caramel flavors help make this a tasty treat.

What's most striking about the three barrels we pulled out of the dark cavernous warehouses at the Brown-Forman plant in Shively, Kentucky is how strikingly different they are. Old Forester is known to be one of the most consistent and high quality distilleries, but even within a handful of casks we've experience incredible diversity. One cask was classic varnish, old wood and spice box. One was ultra woodsy and herbal. This cask is probably the most balanced and approachable of the three and shows tons of dark roasted spices balanced by a dense woodsy sweetness. Subtle aromas of caramel, tea and cooked red apples meld perfectly into the dark spice driven palate. Good texture despite being 90 proof and that baked apple quality comes back up on the finish to round out the package nicely. This isn't whiskey you need to sit around and think about. It's a joy to drink and that's what it's for. It's balanced but not boring. I have difficulty finding any faults with it as long as you don't mind the dry palate mid-palate.

This selection is rich and energetic. The mid-palate is sweet and luscious. The spice lingers on your palate at great length. The finish is long and dry full of complex cedar box and tobacco aromas. I don't smoke anymore, but this bourbon is just begging for a cigar.

Old Forester magic striking gold again. More vanilla char/texturous aroma on this one, reminds me a bit of my favorite bourbon (it starts with a "B". Tons on burnt caramel. Initial brightness when it hits the taste buds softens into a pretty sweetness. Ninety proof, so totally drinkable neat. Love this.

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.
