2016 Casa Ferreirinha "Planalto" Branco Reserva Douro

SKU #1351269

One of the country's (and in fact, one of the world's) first modern white made with temperature controlled fermentation, this delicious wine is a field blend that is fermented with yeasts selected from their own vineyards and then given 6 months of ageing on the lees. Delicious stone fruit flavors are fresh and persistent, delivering loads of personality and terrific value. Casa Ferreirinha was the brainchild of Fernando Nicolau de Almeida, whose purpose was to begin producing high-quality table wines from the Douro Region. In fact, Ferreira became the first port wine company to produce quality table wines in the region, in a learning process that incorporated what was then the state-of-the-art methods in temperature control, learned by Almeida at Calon Segur.

- Although quite small, Portugal produces a great variety of wines ranging from light and fizzy Vinho Verde to hearty and tannic Port. Portugal is Europe's fourth-largest wine-producing region, and has been exporting its wine since the 14th century. The Douro Valley of Portugal is the original and current home for the world's finest Port. The valley spans from east of the city of Oporto all the way to the border of Spain and is the country's best known wine region. Lesser-appreciated DOCs like Bairrada and Dão area also emerging for their fine, rustic reds.
