2016 Domaine de la Mordorée "La Reine des Bois" Châteauneuf-du-Pape

SKU #1349765 100 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark The inky colored 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Reine des Bois is a match for the otherworldly 2001 and is a magical wine that couldn’t be any better. Based on 75% Grenache and the balance Mourvèdre, Syrah, Vaccarèse, and Counoise, raised in tank and neutral barrels, its inky black color is followed by an awesome perfume of blackberries, smoked earth/charcoal, licorice, graphite, and garrigue. Deep, full-bodied, with a huge mid-palate, a seamless texture, and serious tannins, it has the purity as well as depth that makes this vintage so compelling. Inner quote mark (8/2018)

Outer quote mark Deep vivid ruby. A highly perfumed bouquet displays ripe red and blue fruit preserve, incense, garrigue and cola aromas complicated by a vibrant mineral quality that gains strength as the wine opens up. Sweet, seamless and broad in the mouth, offering impressively concentrated Chambord, boysenberry, floral pastille and spicecake flavors that show superb clarity and lift. The blue fruit and floral notes power a strikingly long, spicy finish that's shaped by rounded, even tannins. This wine's marriage of heft to finesse is really impressive. Outer quote mark I tasted several components of what will likely become the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape La Reine des Bois, all of which were remarkable. A Syrah from vat was stunning, offering flamboyant blueberries and spice along with silky tannins, while a Grenache component from barrel was incredibly rich and layered. I suspect my projected score is conservative. It was a pleasure to meet the young and energetic Ambra Delorme, who is working with her mom to carry on Christophe's proud legacy in Tavel and nearby appellations. During my visit, we were capably assisted by Rémy Chauvet, the cellar master. Both were obviously pleased at the quality of the 2015s and 2016s but equally concerned about what looks to be a very small crop in 2017. As we wrapped up our quick tasting, Chauvet sagely pointed out that 'The danger of hot vintages is of overextraction.' (JC) Inner quote mark (10/2017)

93 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Very ripe damson, plum and sloe notes. Mouth-filling, mouth coating, with good weight and concentration of fruit, and a long finish. The alcohol, as usual, is just a touch raised, but there is so much fruit you barely notice. A ripe and flamboyant style that will age well. Drinking Window 2020 - 2032.
