2016 Raul Perez "Ultreia St-Jacques" Mencía Bierzo

SKU #1347018 90 points Wine Spectator

This plump red shows good depth, with ripe flavors of black cherry and red plum supported by vanilla and licorice notes in a plush texture. Well-integrated tannins and fresh acidity keep this balanced, in a fruit-forward style. Drink now through 2022. (TM) (7/2018)

K&L Notes

Raul Perez is not only a Spanish wine consultant to some of the most exciting projects and emergent terroirs of the past 15 or so years, he also makes plenty of his own wines, including this one in his home base of Valtuille (Bierzo). This is a fantastic example of the savory, mineral and bright, almost Syrah like fruit that Mencia is capable of producing when in the best of hands. Highly recommended.

This is a stunning example of why Bierzo is an underappreciated appellation and why Raul Perez is such a celebrated winemaker. Immediately I was struck by aromas of candied bacon and peppercorn, but the wine underneath showed incredible poise. The meaty richness typical of mencia grapes in the region is balanced perfectly with lush, dark berries and gorgeous acid that provides lift and sophistication. The finish is clean and remarkably refreshing, with fine herb and stone helping to allay the sticky sweetness of the fruit. I was instantly smitten, and at this price, the wine is a steal.

This is an incredibly serious wine for $18. Dark brambly black fruit, crushed ferrous rock, gorgeous subtle cracked pepper. The palate is textured and extremely well balanced. It's not heavy or overly rich thanks to the wonderful acidity and while the nose starts a bit primary, with air a gorgeous sanguine undertone starts to creep forward, bringing out earthy exotic herbs and spices. There's obviously an incredible amount of work and some seriously good taste behind these wines and no wonder Perez is becoming a legend in the modern Spanish wine scene. Some how these wines seem wildly undervalued by the industry at large, which is GREAT news for our customers.
