2016 Rhys "Alesia" Anderson Valley Chardonnay

SKU #1345875 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2016 Alesia Chardonnay Anderson Valley offers up an inviting bouquet of green orchard fruit, struck match, blanched almonds and subtle nutmeg. On the palate, it's medium-bodied and succulent, with a more rounded, giving profile than its Santa Cruz Mountains counterpart but displays good cut and vitality, concluding with a youthfully chalky finish. This is the most accessible Chardonnay in the Rhys portfolio, but I'd expect it to drink well for the better part of a decade... beginning with the 2016 vintage, appellation wines will no longer be produced under the Rhys Vineyards label, which henceforth will be reserved for vineyard-designate wines. Instead, Harvey's Alesia label, formerly used for wines from purchased fruit, is being re-introduced as a home for appellation wines--even though these wines will now be produced entirely from estate-grown fruit. John Gilman

Outer quote mark The 2016 Alesia Anderson Valley Chardonnay is a nicely cool customer at 12.5 percent and quite aromatically expressive, wafting from the glass in a fine blend of peach, a touch of guava, lovely soil tones, touch of fresh almond, fruit blossoms and a discreet base of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is fullish, bright and beautifully light on its feet, with a good core, fine, nascent complexity and a long, well-balanced and bouncy finish. Good juice. (Drink between 2018-2025) Inner quote mark (8/2018)

Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2016 Chardonnay (Anderson Valley) is soft, open-knit and quite pretty. With lovely orchard fruit, chamomile and floral notes pushed forward. Light tropical inflections add nuance to this delicious, easygoing Chardonnay. The Anderson Valley Chardonnay emerges from Rhys's Bearwallow estate vineyard. Alesia is back. After a number of years of thinking about what to do with his popular sister label, Rhys proprietor Kevin Harvey has settled on making Alesia the home for his appellation level wines, while Rhys will focus on vineyard designate bottlings, a distinction that makes a lot of sense. So Alesia, once a negociant label, is now 100% estate, with four wines; two Chardonnays and 2 Pinots from vineyards in Anderson Valley and the Santa Cruz Mountains. (AG) Inner quote mark (8/2018)

K&L Notes

The Alesia label at Rhys Vineyards has made a re-appearance with an attractively priced Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the 2016 vintage. In years past as Rhys Vineyards waited for new plantings at their estate vineyards to come into production, they had reserved the Alesia label to bottle wines made from purchased fruit. But this 2016 Anderson Valley bottling is made entirely from estate vines that could one day be bottled as Rhys' Bearwallow Vineyard.
