2013 Epoch "Ingenuity - Paderewski Vineyard" Paso Robles Rhône Blend

SKU #1345849 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The GSM blend from the estate is the 2013 Ingenuity Proprietary Red, which in 2013 is 54% Syrah, 21% Mourvedre, 16% Grenache and the balance Petite Sirah. It saw a touch of whole clusters in the fermentation and like the other 2013s here, spent 17 months in roughly 50% new French oak. This downright sexy, full-bodied and sweetly fruited beauty offers tons of black raspberry, plums, incense and peppery aromas and flavors, gorgeous tannin quality and a long, classy finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. The winery's characteristic dense style is immediately apparent in this blend of 54% Syrah, 21% Mourvèdre, 16% Grenache and 9% Petite Sirah. It offers black licorice, smoked meat, baked black cherry and graphite aromas, needing time to breathe before unleashing black coffee, elderberry jam, asphalt and charcoal flavors through tarry tannins. *Cellar Selection* (MK) (5/2017)

Bright purple. Intense blackberry and candied licorice aromas show excellent clarity and pick up a smoky nuance with air. Sweet and focused, showing strong mineral lift to the densely packed, appealingly sweet black and blue fruit and violet pastille flavors. Becomes more lively and spicy with air, picking up a suave star anise note that carries emphatically through a very long, youthfully tannic finish. While I've no doubt that this sexy wine will reward patience, it has a lot going on already. (JR) (9/2016)

Potent, structured and jammed with character, offering aromas of blackberry, dark chocolate and licorice and rich, muscular flavors of blueberry and smoky cracked pepper. (TF) (3/2017)

Rhone Blends

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year.
Specific Appellation:

Paso Robles

- Located about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, this inland AVA enjoys a sunny and hot growing period while its seaside neighbors hang in the fog. Zinfandel is the traditional red grape of choice, though cabernet, chardonnay, and Rhône varietals are gaining favor. Most are made in a fruit-forward, early drinking style.
