2017 Bedrock Wine Company "Ode to Lulu" California Rosé

SKU #1344805 91 points Vinous

Vivid pale orange-pink. Expressive scents of fresh red berries, orange pith, pungent flowers and chalky minerals show excellent focus and lift. Fine-grained and nervy in the mouth, offering zesty red currant, strawberry and blood orange flavors and a spicy jolt of white pepper on the back half. The floral note sneaks back in steadily on a silky, persistent, mineral-driven finish. (JR) (6/2018)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Made from 75% Mourvèdre and 25% Grenache, the 2017 Ode to Lulu Old Vine Rosé is very pale-salmon pink in color with delicate Bing cherries, raspberry leaves and red currants scents with hints of red apples and white pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with lovely spicy sparks throughout the red berries flavors, with great freshness and a peppery finish. (LPB) (6/2018)

Wine & Spirits

Mild and clean, this blend of mataro and grenache has the fleshy, luscious texture of firmly concentrated old-vine fruit. The tangy balance makes it a refreshing pour to drink by the pool. (8/2018)

K&L Notes

Morgan Twain-Peterson may be the most talented young winemaker in United States. How could he not be, growing up in vineyards beside his well-known father, winemaker Joel Peterson (Ravenswood). Morgan has done exceptionally well in the eyes of the press and has many fans here at K&L. He thoughtfully crafts small-production bottlings from old vines located in heritage vineyards throughout California. Hard to come by, these Bedrock wines already have a loyal following that just keeps growing year after year. We find ourselves lucky to secure one of Morgan’s less talked-about wines in the Bedrock series, his lovely Mourvèdre-dominated rosé.

A fantastic edition of this wine, Ode to Lulu pays homage to the great Lulu Peyraud of Domaine Tempier in Bandol, the origin of some of the finest rosé wines the world has ever seen. The 2017 Lulu is composed of 75% Mataro (Mourvèdre) and the rest Grenache, all from very old vines. Light in color but packed with crunchy berry fruit flavors, mulling spice, dusty earth and torn herbs de Provence. Very Bandol-like indeed. Another wine I plan to drink plenty of this summer…at least until the supply runs out.

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year.
