2016 Williams Selyem "Westside Road Neighbors" Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

SKU #1344648 94 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Perennially delicious, this is a thick, structured wine with underlying elegance and finesse. A baked cherry flavor is enveloped in sweet spice, cola and lavender, uplifted by lively acidity. It is a crowd-pleasing wine that offers plenty of complexity. (VB) Inner quote mark (9/2018)

Outer quote mark A background application of wood sets off the notably spicier red and dark currant aromas that possess additional hints of briar, floral and tea. I very much like the mouth feel of the medium weight flavors as the supporting tannins are quite fine-grained yet sufficiently dense to make clear that this should repay extended cellaring if desired. Impressive. *Outstanding* Inner quote mark (10/2018)

Outer quote mark The 2016 Pinot Noir Westside Road Neighbors is pale to medium ruby-purple in color with a nose of crushed black cherries, pomegranate and mulberries with touches of spice box, menthol and forest floor plus a waft of potpourri. Medium-bodied, it fills the palate with black and red berries and earthy layers, framed with ripe, grainy tannins and nicely balanced freshness, finishing long and perfumed. Outer quote mark Williams Selyem’s blend from a lineup of coveted sites, this wine includes grapes from Allen, Bacigalupi, Bucher, Flax, Rochioli Riverblock and the Williams Selyem Estate. It’s tightly built, almost constricted in its youth, with clean, vibrant fruit that keeps giving the longer it opens in the glass. There’s a spicy edge to the tannins, like gingerroot or sarsaparilla, and a tumble of herbs, earth and stems that adds to the sense of freshness. This should reward patient cellaring. 91 points Connoisseurs Guide

Outer quote mark Although a tad less forthcoming and decidedly slower in showing what ultimately proves to be a deep and concentrated core of very well-defined, ripe cherries and a little deceptive in that regard, the latest Westside Road Neighbors Pinot demands a little more patience before making what in the end is a very potent and convincing fruity statement. More than most of its kin, it is a wine that requires age, and, if not possessing quite as much here-and-now appeal, it is the one that strikes us as having the most strength and potential for five-plus years of growth. Drink its partners early on if you must, but patience is sure to bring to striking success here. Inner quote mark (5/2018)
