2015 Chapelle Saint-Theodoric "La Guigasse" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Previously $75)

 The 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape La Guigasse comes from the lieu-dit of the same name, a cool, sandy site. This 100% Grenache features anise and cinnamon on the nose, lush fruit, a silky mouthfeel and a long, slightly warm finish sizzling with pepper and licorice. I'm not sure how long it will age, but it's delicious now, so why wait? This joint venture between Baptiste Grangeon of Domaine de Cristia and American importer Peter Weygandt draws fruit from three hectares of land Weygandt owns in the La Guigasse and Rayas lieux-dits. The wines are 100% Grenache and vinified as whole clusters before being aged for 24 months in demi-muids. The 2015s were to be bottled on October 9th, just about one month after I tasted them.(JC)  (10/2017)

 Limpid ruby-red. Intense red fruit, floral pastille and Asian spice scents are complicated by suggestions of candied licorice and smoky minerals. Juicy and precise on the palate, offering sweet raspberry and spicecake flavors that tighten up slowly as the wine opens up. Shows outstanding clarity and spicy lift on the gently tannic finish, which strongly echoes the floral note.(JR)  (10/2017)

 Possessing more depth and richness, yet less precision and focus, the 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Guigasse is a bigger, richer, broader wine. Black cherries, flowers, Asian spice and resinous notes all emerge from this full-bodied, ripe effort that has ample texture and fat, and a great finish. Like the Grand Pin, this cuvée is 100% Grenache, is not destemmed, and is brought up all in demi-muids. Chapelle Saint Theodoric is the estate of well-known importer Peter Weygandt and the wines come from two lieux-dits; Pignan and Guigasse. Made by Baptiste Grangeon of Domaine de Cristia, the wines are not destemmed and brought up all in older barrels. If there‚Äôs a Rayas look-alike out there, this is it.  (10/2017)

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. - Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king).
