James E. Pepper "1776" Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)

SKU #1340350 Wine & Spirits

James E. Pepper is an iconic brand in Bourbon history, one of the most popular until the mid-twentieth century. Now Georgetown Trading Co. has relaunched it, working with Lawrenceburg Distillers Indiana. They’ve derived their recipe from a letter dated 1887 from James E. Pepper himself, detailing his production methods and grain bills. Straight out of the bottle, it’s easy to see that this is a young whiskey, barely pale brown in color. The rye offers plenty of the grain’s telltale spice, as well as some nice meadow grass, gingersnap and apple-core qualities. The Bourbon projects more oak than its brother, with coconut, caramel and pepper flavor and a mild woodsy bite. Their high proofs and low prices make these great for Manhattans and Old Fashioneds, where the ice dilution tames the heat, but not the flavor. (LB) (1/2014)

Whisky Advocate

Big mint/grass nose with sweet grain and a touch of vanilla behind it. Fiery, slippery with rye oiliness, popping with that mint, and rye-bitter on the finish; a bit of a bully. That's not all bad, though; too many ryes strive to be smooth these days, but this lets it rock, and does it well. A chunk of ice doesn't hurt this at all. Potent, bold. Sourced whiskey. K&L Notes

In 2008 Amir Peay relaunched the historic James E. Pepper brand established during the American Revolution. This is not someone who has taken on the brand lightly. He has dedicated himself to the restoration of the original James E. Pepper Distillery in Lexington, Kentucky and the building of a history museum on site as well as a rejuvenated distillery. The whiskey that has resulted from Amir's passion is terrific. Bottled at 100 proof and with a whopping 38% rye in the mash bill, this bourbon is rich with vanilla, honey, and baking spices and bolstered by the piquant and herbal note of the rye. Think of a richer version of Bulleit.

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.
