Piùcinque Italian Gin (700ml)

SKU #1340087

The name "Piùcinque," which means "plus five" in Italian, comes from the first recipe that was used to create this gin. Once the balance of the ten botanicals were defined, the next task was to work on their intensity. As the team was analyzing different combinations, they only found one with the perfect alchemy. This bottle was tagged by the master distiller with the wording "plus five" (as there was a greater intensity of five of the ten botanicals) and from this the name Piùcinque was naturally born. The flavors of sage, bergamot, and ginger are what make this gin a stand out. Botanical aromatics include: Juniper, Wormwood, Flowering Peaks, Angelica, Almond, Ginger, Citrus, Zedoaria, Iris, Sage, and Bergamotto. Visually, this gin is crystal clear, with instant and persistent aromas of citrus and fresh notes moving into the warmer tones of wormwood and almond. On the finish, the herbal notes pleasantly echo the aromas, and the finish is long, dry, and exquisite.

What a stylish bottle of gin! I suppose we should expect as much from the Italians! With haunting citrus notes from the deft use of bergamot and a rich, creamy texture that never becomes heavy, this is worthy of being considered in the top tier of gin. The sage in the recipe gives this the right amount of green lift to balance out the exoticism, and I can't wait to get this home and make a G&T with it!

There may a problem with this gin in that it goes down a little too easily, dare I say that this is a super crushable gin. A beautiful nose that is resplendent with botanical notes still manages to come off as soft and clean. There is a lovely nutty and floral balance happening here with some sweet citrus and a line of clean acid driving the body. What really struck me about this gin was how the softly sweet floral, almond, bergamot, and juniper all managed to work so well together by giving lots of flavor that is clean and far to easy to drink.

I was so impressed by how fresh and elegant this gin is. It feels brand new yet it hasn't moved too far from a classic London Dry style. The bergamot gives the gin a very delicate citrus note and the ginger a zippy cut, like a beautiful acid line in a great wine. This balances perfectly with the floral tones and rounder woody notes of wormwood and almond. All this comes together with the clean fragrance of juniper and a long dry finish. The balance is spectacular.

What intrigued me most about this Italian gin is the elegance and soft sense of presence it has from nose to palate. This not due to lack of flavor by any means! The gin is boosting with Italian botanicals- 10 in total, that create a unique and unmatched flavorful gin, but it is not overwhelming in its presence. It is clean, clear and comforting in it's perfect approachability. The use of bergamot gives you the freshness of lemon but the sweetness of orange while the addition of sage gives a slight savory herbal note. A wonderful gin to sip on it's own, mix with tonic, or create a wonderfully aromatic cocktail!
