2014 Colgin "IX Estate" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

SKU #1338138 98 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Gorgeous aromas of lean pencil, blackcurrants and raspberries. So perfumed and glorious. Full-bodied, chewy and intense with great length and intensity. Silky and muscular yet agile and energetic. Needs three to four years to resolve some of the tannins. Inner quote mark (1/2017)

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark From their steep hillside vineyards on Pritchard Hill, the 2014 Proprietary Red IX Estate is an old-fashioned Médoc blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, but with some Cabernet Franc (rarely seen in the Médoc these years) as well as Merlot and Petit Verdot. Striking aromatics of violets, forest floor, loamy soil nuances, blueberry, black raspberry and blackberry soar from the glass of this spectacular 2014. The acidity seems reasonable but on the lower side, the texture is magnificent, and the overall purity and equilibrium flawless. This is a wine pushing, even demanding, a three-digit score once again, but I’m holding back – at least for now. This magnificent effort from Colgin should drink beautifully for 25-30 years. Drink through 2046. (RP) 98+ Inner quote mark (10/2016)

97 points Vinous

Outer quote mark A huge, dark wine, the 2014 IX Estate exudes full-throttle intensity and richness, with big mountain tannins that give the wine its overall shape and feel. Huge swaths of mineral-drenched fruit make a strong first impression as this dark, brooding wine gradually shows its personality. Graphite, sage and grilled herbs envelop a core of intense fruit. A wine of volume and breadth, the 2014 IX Estate is going to take at least a few years to come into its own. (AG) Inner quote mark (12/2016)

93 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Aromas of loamy, dusty earth fold in nicely with the rich chocolaty core of dark berry. The tannins muster strength without overwhelming, adding the right touch of texture and traction. (JL) Inner quote mark (11/2017)

The IX Estate Vineyard is a site that can be described as a viticultural masterpiece and, unsurprisingly, it produces some of the most viscerally thrilling wines I have ever had the pleasure to taste. The range of flavors runs the spectrum - the nose and palate are anchored by dark red fruits, blackberries, iron and dried herbs and the experience tapers down with wildly polished tannins to round everything out. The impeccable quality of this wine is clearly the by product of a first-growth caliber vineyard and an insanely talented winemaking team. Kudos!

When tasting at Colgin, our host Paul Roberts said of the 2014 vintage "in a perfect world, this is what we'd do every year." Two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon, the balance is a good portion of Cab Franc (16%) and Merlot (12%), with the remainder Petit Verdot. It is one of the more aromatically striking examples we experienced on a trip of some of Napa's finest estates, with deep red and black fruit, sage, and thyme. The IX Estate gives you the impression it is going to be a big wine, but then it is cool, composed, and relatively elegant on the palate with a remarkable minerality and superb texture. Mouth coating fine tannin carries flavors of blackberry, black cherry, and forest floor. Endlessly complex and regal, it is a remarkable wine that could easily cellar centerpiece while aging gracefully for two decades or more.

Rich, layered and wonderfully textured, the 2014 IX Estate Vineyard is about a perfect a Napa Cab as you'll ever find. Ripe flavors of black cherry, plum, and cassis greet the palate and are later joined by lavender, sage, and thyme. While it's impossible not to fall hard for the fruit, it's the wine's distinct minerality that steals the show. Powdery tannins make an appearance at the end adding excellent definition and structure. If a wine had a soundtrack, this one would be Beethoven's "Ode to Joy." A spectacular wine from start to finish.
