Còdigo 1530 K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Anejo Tequila (750ml)

SKU #1337289

Since its launch into the California market about a year ago, Còdigo has been our top-selling Tequila brand at K&L for a good reason! It's flavor profile is in line with what today's drinker wants: the spirit is clean, well-made, high in quality, without additives, yet smooth and refined on the palate with richness and weight. It speaks to any Tequila fan, expert or novice. Còdigo 1530 started as a private recipe tequila that had been contracted by a family in Los Cabos for almost a decade, before finally becoming a commercial product in the U.S. Made at NOM 1500 by Tequileria las Juntas, the product was nameless for many years, existing solely as a home brand for family members and friends. Because of our relationship and success with Còdigo thus far, we worked together to do a private barrel edition of the Añejo, available only at K&L. Of the five Tequila expressions available from Còdigo, the Añejo is the one that really showcases the quality of the brand due to its year-long maturation in French oak ex-wine casks. As a result, it's full of that exotic spice that only French oak can exert, and the wine influence acts something like a mild sherry note, adding a little hint of chewiness that whisky fans tend to really enjoy. It's a high end Añejo tequila, but it's one that absolutely delivers on all fronts. This single cask expression is rich and supple on the palate with agave notes of savory citrus accented and lifted by the French oak flavors of sweet spice.

This single barrel has a lot to offer. To start off it has a beautiful golden color. In the mouth it is full bodied and rich, with subtle dry wood spice nuances. Very interesting and complex, but most importantly, it is delicious. Any fan of anejo tequilas should love this selection.

If you haven’t had Codigo, or know about their product, I highly recommend checking them out. Their standards are uncompromising, starting with the agave. The minimum brix level (sugar content) that they accept at their distillery is 32% (trucks containing agaves with less than that have been known to be sent away). They also use a proprietary shredder designed to help minimize the amount of ethanol that ends up in the product. What we lucky tequila drinkers are left with is an opulent, sweet, yet balanced anejo that put simple, makes you go, “mmmmmmmm.” Black peppered caramel, pineapple skin and pine wood greet the nose and after the initial moment to savor the juice, strong notes of roasted agave, oak and butterscotch play across the palate. The finish is long and mirrors the richness in the palate; letting this anejo have the final word has never been so sweet.

This single barrel shows so much more depth and nuance than typical Anejo. Mint, lively spice, and sublimely integrated oak make this rich and full without feeling flabby. Vanilla, caramel, cinnamon and toasted wood delight the palate with a nutty finish. The texture is perfectly pleasant rather than mouth-coating or overly buttery. This would make a fantastic gift, but be sure to pick one up for yourself as well; this barrel won't last long.

Blossoming with vanilla and cinnamon, this is an easygoing Añejo that feels like the holidays, but is light enough to enjoy year round. Subtly toasted oak on the nose with a nimble palate and great pure agave fruit, our exclusive barrel release from staff favorite Còdigo is an elegant addition to an already stellar lineup.

What I love about this single barrel (besides my thought that Codigo makes an incredibly balanced and elegant tequila) is how energetic it is. Many Anejos on store shelves these days are heavy on the palate, textured, and cloyingly sweet. This anejo remains light on its feet and displays a bouquet of melon fruit with a touch of vanilla on the nose that slides right down with ease and grace.

We're always fans of Codigo and over the past couple years we've really enjoyed picking out single barrels from them. For this K&L Codigo Anejo we have scents of salted caramels, syrupy honey, and big spice – from black pepper to baking spices. There’s also a really nice herbaceous quality to this tequila with hints of hay, thyme, and sage. There’s more grassiness and vanilla notes on the palate, and the finish fades back into the pepper and herbs.

After our last barrel evaporated we had to go back to the well and see if we could secure a second Anejo barrel from our most popular tequila producer. Codigo is known for a couple of unique things. First off, they were the house tequila of one of Cabo's most exclusive resorts. Second, they use only "extra maduro" agaves; basically they're over ripe and provide an incredible texture, intensity of flavor, and body. Third, they only age their tequilas in Napa Cabernet barrels from a top cult winemaker. For most of their aged products they lightly char these barrels before loading them with their precious agave spirit. The end result for their anejo is a tequila unlike any other. It's very full bodied, while dark in color, it doesn't possess that huge vanilla spike that most bourbon aged tequilas get. It's much more nuanced. It showcases the cooked agave first and foremost, something that is so often lost in Anejo tequilas. That gentle pepper melds perfectly with the refined wood notes of French oak picking up sweet spices and just a hint of creme brulee. The finish is super long and clean, making this the perfect holiday gift for any tequila sipper on your list.

Còdigo is always one of my go-to recommendations for customer looking for a nice, high-end tequila because of the amount of delicate, hands-on care that goes into it. Many distilleries don't want you to know where there agave is sourced from since there is actually an agave shortage and they have to throw in a bunch of additives to make it taste matured. Còdigo tells you exactly where their agave comes from with their NOM number, so if you're curious, you can find the exact geographical location. On top of that, they don't have any additives of sugar or other elements to beef it up. All the flavor comes from the pureness of fruit and gentle touch of the makers. This version in particular is so pure and unique, and as it a single barrel instead of a blend, you won't find anything else exactly like it anywhere. Soft, rich and spicy, this is one I'm going to be giving to my tequila loving friends this holiday season.

This has a pure sweet agave fruit core, with cinnamon and vanilla integrated seamlessly into the fruit. There’s a hint of a smoke, minerals and guava that give the spicy profile added complexity. Incredibly smooth and easy-sipping, don’t use this one for margaritas.

I reached out to Codigo for a single cask of anejo because I knew if I could find the right barrel and negotiate the right price, we could introduce our customers to the NEXT GREAT $100 TEQUILA. The Codigo is an updated and better version of Don Julio 1942, a bellwether Tequila that has for over a decade been the go-to gift bottle for those looking to present a loved one or friend with Mexico's finest distillate. This single cask of Codigo smashes that paradigm wide open, bringing all the smooth-textured, rich oak of a classic anejo, but with none of the sticky-sweet viscosity. It's loaded with decadent flavors, notes of chocolate, citrus peel, and exotic spice, but it's still clean and spicy on the finish. Simply put, it's a 100% pure expression of Tequila that tastes luxurious while maintaining its roots in classic production. I'm just sad we don't have more of it. It's going to be a HUGE hit.
