2014 Porterhouse "Williams' Reserve" Red Blend Santa Ynez (Previously $30)

SKU #1335515 92-93 points James Suckling

A firm and silky young wine with beautiful currants, blackberries, cedar and tobacco. Full-bodied, juicy and long. Love the lively acidity and freshness to this. Fine tannin structure. Higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend this year gives it a pretty pureness. (4/2018)

Wine Enthusiast

As ode to his family's butchering past, this red blend would go very well with one of the fatty steaks that winemaker Adam Comartin's relatives once cut. Aromas of licorice, sandalwood, lilac and jammy fruits lead into a palate loaded with clove, nutmeg, thyme and pepper spice, all set against a backdrop of boysenberry fruit. (MK) (4/2018)

K&L Notes

If you are on the look out for something bold that will impress without breaking the bank, Porterhouse brings it to the table. The winemaker notes describe the Williams's Reserve 2014 as having, "Intense flavors of blackberry jam, tea, cedar, pepper, spice, vanilla with full body weight and tannin structure. 67% Petite Sirah, 17% Syrah, 16% Grenache. Matured for 30 months in 100% French Oak; 33 % new oak. Only 125 cases made. Santa Ynez Valley runs East-West with no mountain range blocking the valley from the Pacific Ocean, which enables the cool air and fog to penetrate the vineyard during the long summer days common to Santa Barbara. This is important because it allows for more even ripening and produces balanced flavors."

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year.
Specific Appellation:

Santa Maria/Santa Barbara

- Santa Maria and Santa Ynez make up the two AVAs of Santa Barbara County, an area known for its natural beauty and temperate climate. The best grape-growing areas, however, are located on the very coastal reaches of these two appellations, and are cooled by ever-present fog and ocean breezes (it is even cooler and foggier here than Carneros!). As expected, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive while the more inland zones lay claim to Bordeaux varietals and some Rhône blends.
