Blended of 47% Syrah, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, 3% Sangiovese and 2% Viognier, the 2014 Todos Proprietary Red Wine reveals a medium to deep garnet-purple color and a pronounced blackberries, blueberry pie and cassis-scented nose with an Indian spices and black pepper-laced undercurrent, plus a waft of lavender. Soft, medium-bodied, perfumed and elegant in the mouth, this finely crafted beauty offers great seamlessness and harmony, finishing long and spicy. (LPB) 94+ (9/2017)

I loved the 2014 Todos, and this kitchen sink blend of 47% Syrah, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, 3% Sangiovese and 2% Viognier isn't far behind the other cuvées in quality. Currants, black raspberries, toasted spice, earth and hints of herbs emerge from this medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated, textured beauty that has tons of to love. It will keep through 2024. The 2014 Todos is expressive, open and quite giving, all of which make it super-appealing, even in its infancy. There is good depth to the sweet red cherry, plum, licorice, menthol and floral notes, all of which meld together effortlessly. Medium in body and nuanced, the Todos will give readers a good look at the Jonata house style at a relatively affordable price. (AG) (9/2017)

K&L Notes

Winemaker's Notes: "Lifted aromatic combination of fruit and spice; cabernet sauvignon meets syrah. Then viognier joins the mix. Exotic and true representation of the all the varieties grown at the Jonata property. In a year of structure and seriousness, this wine brings the hedonism. Soft, plush and complex. Absolutely gorgeous. This wine delivers everything that we hope to see from Todos."

Jonata is the undersung side project from the folks producing Screaming Eagle, so if you don't know Jonata yet, then you owe it to yourself to start paying attention to this label. The "Todos" red blend is Syrah-dominant, with all the power one might expect from that. There's big spice on the nose of black pepper and chili, with a good slathering of black fruits. On the palate the fruit notes come more distinctly into focus with tart cherry, blackberry, blueberry, and quince. But this is no juicy pushover: the palate rounds out with savory meaty qualities, a lovely line of salinity, and more bold spice. A standout for sure.

Another killer release from Matt Dees and Jonata. I love the concept of "Todos" that encapsulates all the varieties grown on this stunning Ballard Canyon estate. It truly captures this rocky, sandy, sparse, chaparral dotted landscape. Briary red fruits, spiced plum, warm dust, smoked meat and leather. Cigar box notes emerge with time in the glass. It really unfurls and becomes complex with a little decant. Medium bodied, lovely balance of restrained fruit and layered savory aspects. The structure of the wine makes it a great accompaniment to grilled meat or hearty roasted mushrooms. If you can imagine it, it's kinda like northern Rhone Syrah meets left bank Bordeaux...with just a dash of California ripeness thrown. Fascinating stuff all around!

Ever since their arrival, Jonata has been pushing the qualitative envelope of the Santa Barbara wine scene. This is one of the few wineries in the area specializing in big bold reds based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah. The Todos is an unusual blend of all the red varietals planted on the estate plus just a pinch of Viognier. Somehow it all comes together to form one of their most distinctive wines. I’ve poured this wine several times this year for our staff training and customer tasting and it’s been the standout wine every time. It really is a most remarkable creation. It’s dark and brooding with an amazing amount of energy and lift.

Todos is right! I have to admit that I didn’t know what to expect from this wine, but what I got wouldn’t have been a guess for me to begin with. The nose of this wine is far more savory than fruity. It doesn’t seem like your normal California “red blend,” as it’s a lot more precise. While "Todos" has real density and richness, it doesn’t resort to fat and squalor, it has good acidity without sacrificing richness, and the flavors are all over the board, very hard to categorize, because there’s not really anything else like this wine! Having said that you won’t be able to categorize it, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it. Tt’s delicious, balanced with a hint of tannin, long finish, and a perfect accompaniment to rustic, grilled meats.

Matt Dees, arguably the most talented winemaker along the Center Coast, delivers yet again with his 2014 “Todos” Ballard Canyon red blend. It’s as if the Rhone and Bordeaux met and took the best qualities from each other to make this unique offering. Initially, this wine reveals wonderful Rhone characteristics of wild game, red peppercorn and cured meat. A bit of air brings out Bordeaux, with chocolate, raspberry, leather and cigar box. Overall this is an amazing wine from a producer that knows how to utilize each of the 7 varietals in a way that few can.

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year.
