2015 Biecher & Schaal Altenberg de Bergheim Grand Cru Alsace

SKU #1332593 95 points Wine Enthusiast

An incredibly pure and piercing note of lemon oil hits the nose. The medium-sweet palate impresses with both fresh and dried notes of fruit: plum, white sultana, white currant and the ripest pear and apple you can imagine. This is full-on and big but balanced by tingling, fresh and precise acidity. A field blend of polar opposites, Riesling and Gewurztraminer, this unites their virtues of aromatic textured richness and poised finesse. Again, this is not a wine that is easily categorized with its medium-sweet, soil- and fruit-driven profile, but it is a joy to experience and savor. The finish lasts and lasts. Drink 2017 - 2035.

K&L Notes

Winery Notes: "Rich and mouthcoating. Honey, baked apple and cinnamon flavors easily glide across the palate, buttressed by ripe acidity to keep it from becoming cloying. Drinkable now, but should age effortlessly. A true 'Grand Vin' that reflects and emphasises the nature of the terroir even more than the characteristics of the grapes. This 55 years old vineyard is Just outside the medieval city of Bergheim, the vineyard extends over the steeply sloping south face of the Grasberg. The soil is composed of Jurassic fossil-rich limestones and marls. There is limestone, marl and sand, often reddish, the soils are very stony. The old vines of different varieties typical to Alsace are here planted, picked and vinified together, a style of wine making that dates back to the 13th century. The result is a fabulous, rich, organic wine to enjoy on its own, or which will partner foie gras or cheese perfectly."

This wine has stunning floral aromas, accompanied by rich exotic fruit and wild honey notes, which captivate you immediately! On the palate it's off-dry and round with lots of fruit but also with distinctive mineral tone that comes from fossil-rich limestone and marl soil and keeps it fresh and intriguing. Exquisitely complex and beautifully structured wine that comes from one of the oldest vineyards in Alsace dating back to 13th century. I am a fan of it for life now.
