1988 Cambus 29 Year Old "Old Particular" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Grain Scotch Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1331541

Cambus, along with Bowmore, is a distillery we will always stock from when available. One of Diageo's top grain distilleries until it was closed forever in 1993, not are the Cambus whiskies smooth and round in character from front to back, because the distillery has been gone for 25 years now it means that every bottle consumed from this point out moves the whisky a step closer to total extinction! This 29 year comes in at 46.9% with less richness from the oak than our previous 25 year cask, but with more vanilla and nuance. In essence, if you're a fan of the Nikka Coffey Grain expression, consider this an older, full proof version for a hot price. The nose is a standard grain profile of buttery oak, but on the palate those flavors open up into toasted coconut and cookie dough. It's a mellow, easy drinking whisky and an ice cube works wonders.

I tasted this wonderful grain whiskey once alone and then with a splash of water. Without water it is soft and round with sweet caramel undertones. It was very good. But it really opened up with a touch of water becoming much more complex and interesting with a velvet mouth feel and a subtle spice note. There was also a sweet vanilla nose. This grain whiskey is easy to drink and enjoy.

After years of trying to explain to our customers what exactly grain whisky is and why they should care about rarities like Cambus in addition to Brora and Port Ellen, we're now at the point where our customers ask us: WHEN ARE YOU GETTING MORE? Because ultimately who doesn't want nearly 30 year old Scotch at full proof for a hundred bucks? Who actually gets tired of drinking delicious grain goodness of this quality for this price? Not me. You get lots of mellow Scotch maturity for your dollar here and you get the rarity of the lost Cambus name to add just a bit of lore to that experience.

A quick glance at the very first order on my K&L profile confirms what I already knew when I sniffed this glass. I loved Cambus then, and I love it even more now. I'm shocked to realize that the 21 year old Cambus I bought many years ago was $109!!! This 29 year old clocks in under $100! It's nearly 30 years of grainy goodness. Rich, easy, cereal driven and luscious. Fans of the more recent North British grains rejoice. This is a slam dunk.
