1997 Auchentoshan 20 Year Old "Old Particular" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1331538

Auchentoshan, while typically overlooked as a light-bodied Lowlander, has been on the ups over the last few years thanks to a shot in the arm from Beam-Suntory who have rediscovered the dependable whisky as of late. In a series of new expressions, from the American Oak to the recently-released Bartender's Malt, the focus on value has been front and center, while improving the quality of the malt, which in our opinion has never been better. Thanks to a new appreciation for Auchentoshan with our customers, we've been digging deep into some of Scotland's warehouse archives, hoping to continue that value streak with some older, single barrel, cask strength additions and we've found yet another winner with this new 20 year old cask. Bold at 57% ABV and with loads of vanilla from the oak, this is Auchentoshan with heft and punch, but simultaneously easy to drink with lighter fruity notes and heather on the finish. While pricing for NAS cask strength whiskies is now creeping up near $100 a bottle, we're thrilled to move ahead with actual 20+ year old selections from top distilleries for the same cost. Those looking for value have come to depend on Auchentoshan as of late, and they'll find more of the same in this expression.

I have grown to really appreciate Auchentoshan, it always represents just good whisky for the sake of drinking whisky. Getting to taste this single barrel offers even more of that experience, giving a delightful sipping experience for those just looking for a good glass of Scotch. At 20 years of age the Auchentoshan offers classic Lowland honeyed wheat and toffee with a touch of butterscotch and cream. Lovely vanilla and spice notes creep into the finish with a little salty tang. Easy to enjoy and utterly delicious.

Another great offering from Old Particular. This is a single cask selection that should please a broad range of people. It has a nice nose of wax and honey. In the mouth the 20 years of aging has given this cask some concentration with the nice malt and honey flavors . It is balanced and not overly sweet. I tasted this with a splash of water.

This is the kind of whisky that could get me in trouble on a week night. It's friendly and balanced and has an alluring honeyed finnish that will keep you adding just a little more to your glass. Toffee, butted almonds, and cocoa on the nose. The palate is sweet and creamy, with salted caramel, fresh toasted barley and a hint of golden pear.

The drinker's malt. Auchentoshan is has been a long favorite of mine and is absolutely one of the most underrated distilleries in Scotland. I'll tell anyone that can listen: if you like to drink tasty and balanced whisky with nuance and supple drinkability, Auchentoshan is the best value out there. From the $43 Bartenders Malt (that I seriously thought was over 100 bucks when I tasted it) to this 20 year old gem STILL under 100 bucks, the distillery delivers over and over again. Loaded up on that creme brulee coat sweetness and with a strong gristy edge to it, this cask is a pure delight. The 57% natural proof brings home the strong and long finish and gives this whisky more power than I'm typically used to in Auchentoshan.

I'm very excited to visit Auchentoshan for the first time this Spring because I'm loving everything coming out of this distillery at the moment. Sure, I have a soft spot for Glasgow and Auchentoshan has always been the sort of working class malt of the locals there, but despite that sentimentality the malt is better than it's ever been. This 20 year old single cask shows you the incredible bones that the blending team there has to work with when constructing something like the Bartender's Malt. It's potent with vanilla, lively on the palate, and so pleasing on the finish with its lithe sweetness and gentle spice. Drinking Auchentoshan has always been a pleasure for me. It's a whisky for people who like to drink whisky rather than talk about it. That's a big part of its charm.
