2015 Laventura Viura Rioja

SKU #1330464 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2015 Laventura Viura is mostly Viura from old vines with a 5% blend of other white varieties. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in 600-liter oak barrels for 12 months with the lees. The grapes were sourced from Villabuena in the Rioja Alavesa. It's balanced and elegant, in the house style, clean and precise without any excess. It also has well-integrated oak and perfect ripeness; it turns more balsamic with time in the glass. The varietal line keeps the Laventura brand, and the wines show good typicity. (LG) (2/2018)

K&L Notes

Native South African Bryan MacRobert grew up in a farming family, and has been quietly making some of that country's best value wines. He fell in love with a girl from Rioja as well as the region's wines (we forget in which order) but quickly became fascinated with the inimitable terroirs and endless potential for wines in the region. A proponent not only of organic viticulture, but also a strong believer in the importance of legacy organically cultivated vines on top quality sites, Bryan is picky about where he grows and sources vines. The winemaking is no frills but clearly well thought out and opinionated; think lots of smaller cement vats and wood in sizes greater than 225l barriques. He's a fan of Stockinger cooperage. Particularly with the whites, these are wines where transparency, minerality and acidity drive the style. Bryan is a huge fan of Rioja white wines, and gives them the true respect that they deserve! This 2015 Viura is fantastic, with the combination of weight, richly intense fruit, minerality and acid that should see it through years of agening. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish wine buyer)

Of the two whites released by Laventura in 2015, the Viura is the more classic style for Rioja Blanco, though this one is quite different than most inexpensive, “drink now” white Rioja. With its pears and honey, subtle beeswax, fresh herbs, and medium body, it’s almost Chenin Blanc-like in texture and style, and its potential to age seems comparable.

In recent years, a great deal of money and passion has been poured in the burgeoning Spanish wine industry, helping to improve quality among its vast array of wines from sparkling Cava to Sherry to Rioja Gran Reserva. The most important red-wine-producing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra in the north and Priorat and Penedes in the northeast.
