2009 Baron-Fuenté "Grand Millesime" Brut Champagne

SKU #1329480 91 points Wine Enthusiast

This Aube-based producer’s latest vintage release is rich and creamy. It is young, although it is possible to find the texture and density that will allow it to age. It is in a crisp style, tight with acidity, finishing taut and mineral. Drink from 2019. (RV) (8/2018)

K&L Notes

This all estate grown gem from Baron Fuente is composed of 45% Chardonnay, 40% Meunier, and 15% Pinot Noir from around Charly-sur-Marne. This drinks great right now because of the wonderfully ripe 2009 vintage in Champagne, but will also keep great in good storage over the medium term. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer)

This ripe vintage Champagne is composed of 45% Chard, 40% Meunier, and 15% Pinot Noir. It has quite the pretty nose with big floral elements and lightness. Lavender swirls out of the effervescence before being grounded somewhat with aromas of French toast. The palate delivers flavors of yellow pear, dried apricot, and soft yeasty notes. I love this Champagne for its combinations of rich creaminess and fresh fruit and flowers. It's gorgeous and has the full package.

Another incredible Champagne at an even more incredible value. The Baron-Fuente Grand Millesime can easily hold itself up against Champagnes that are twice the price. 2009s across the board are drinking well right now, and this creamy, nutty, vibrant, and brioche-forward sparkler shows off all the best characteristics of the vintage. I particularly enjoy its citrus profile and delicate (but noticeable) acidity.

The complexity of this vintage Champagne it is not reflected in its incredible price, which is only possible because of our direct import program. That is an incredible opportunity to show off with a bottle of a boutique (and very hard to get) Champagne in a dinner party.

I recently tasted this alongside some other Champagnes and was incredibly impressed at how it stood up to bottles twice the price. A rich nose filled with what you expect from classic Champagne, the depth is impressive and I kept finding nuances here and there. The palate has enough fruit but also embraces the toasty and brioche-y qualities that some people really crave, and the finish hangs on for an impressive time. The price to quality ratio is absolutely insane and this is an easy pick again and again for people who want something to celebrate without dipping too far into their pockets.

Made from all estate grapes in a warm harvest season, the long, cool and even growing season has made this champagne one of the best in terms of flavors and vibrancy. Amazing acid and silky smooth finish, this bubbly is great to enjoy with a meal or as an appertif. Great pairing ideas include smoky cheese, fatty fish or fresh fruit.

Again, a Vintage champagne for $29.99! Baron Fuente never disappoints. This disgorgement of the 2009 vintage has a pretty perfumed nose. Ripe and smooth flavors and texture with a candied sweet/tart fruit finish.

The staff here at K&L constantly touts Baron-Fuente as one of the highest price/quality ratio producers in the building, and well, they're done it again. With pronounced orange marmalade and toasted almond notes this is a fun, open bottle of bubbles with nice yeasty dough notes fading away near the end of the great finish.

While 2008’s strength was structure and acidity, 2009 shines with supreme drinkability and luxurious texture. Buttery notes on the nose with pure pear fruit through the palate, plus hints of lemon and leesy toastiness, this release of Baron-Fuente’s "Grand Millesime" finishes cleaner than expected for such a rich style. A welcome addition to our Direct Import Champagne collection, and a killer value as well.

I have grown to love the opulence and pizzaz of the 2009 vintage Champagnes, and Baron Fuente's really drives the point home. It showcases the richness of the vintage with concentrated flavors of dried apricots, ripe persimmons and exotic spice but with a balancing acidity and incredible texture and toast from the long lees aging. To find vintage Champagne of this quality under $30 is truly a miracle, don't miss out on this one!

You will not believe this is a low dosage champagne. It is crisp and lively with the acidity well in check. Cooked apples and stone fruit with nutty yeasty flavors. Good richness and still light with fine bubbles. great with appetizers, white pasta or soft cheese. Yes please!

The dry, low dosage characteristics of this Champagne make it a truly lip-smacking wine that screams for food. A great way to start your meal and enjoy with a savory amuse bouche. Baron Fuente never fails to deliver quality at a great price and you can always feel confident opening a bottle of this at your next dinner party.

Made from 100% estate fruit from Charly Sur Marne, the 2009 "Grand Millesime" is powerful and rich. Hailing from a ripe, sunny vintage, the dosage is low, and the result is a wine that accentuates the natural quality of the fruit. The overall impression of the wine is clean and dry, but with a toasty depth and opulence.

The 2009 sings with an opulence that reminds me of a stone fruit crumble. Toasty spices, hint of nutmeg with notes of white nectarine are all balanced on the framework of lovely acidity and tight bubbles. This is such a fine bottle of Champagne to drink now and over the next few years.

Another fantastic bottle from Baron Fuente! The nose starts off with apple butter and poached pears, then gives way to a rich kouign amann pastry, roasted lemon and yeast. The palate has an intense nuttiness, almost like eating a handful of raw hazelnuts while still providing a clean mineral note and vibrant acidity. A great bottle to pick up for your next Champagne craving.

In contrast to the zesty 2008, this newly released 2009 is essentially lush with (browned) apple butter, yellow fruits and caramel. While lush on the palate, it does have a nice, clean finish with fine acidity, Meyer lemon and nectarines. Another vintage gem from Baron Fuente!

First and foremost, it's always good to mention that vintage Champagnes are only produced when the harvest warrants it, which usually means you can add an extra $10 -$30 to the bottle cost. Hence, when I see vintage Champagne from a grower who actually owns and farms his own grapes selling for $29.99, my ears perk up. Getting real Champagne of any level of quality for less than $30 today is a rarity as is, let alone vintage Champagne from a grower/producer. So let's talk about the quality: the nose is lively, fresh, and enticing. Citrus notes dance along side brioche and bready notes, and everything about the aromas screams out FUN! When you taste the 2009 Baron Fuente, however, and the clean flavors give way to a nutty, almond skin finish with leesy richness and texture, you begin to wonder just how the Baron family managed to pack this much incredible quality into such an affordable and accessible package. I'm still scratching my head seven bottles later.

A rich, beautiful Champagne! The 2009 was a ripe and therefore accessible vintage for enjoying now. Pretty pie crust, soft spiced pear and apple, and lemon zest with the lightest notes of chalky mineral showing as the wine warms in the glass. Lovely as your next house Champagne- or for your upcoming Oscar party!

The lovely, old school toastiness of this Grand Millesime grabbed me from the very first sniff! Baron Fuente has got a real winner from the warm 2009 harvest here, with beurre d'isigny cream and savor, but backed up with more than enough snappy refreshment to keep me coming back for more. This is an excellent aperitif, but will also go very well with gougeres or other finger foods.
Drink from 2018 to 2029
