Octomore "8.3" Heavily Peated Islay Single Malt Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1329244 90 points Whisky Advocate

One of four Octomore 08 Masterclass releases, this was distilled in 2011 from Islay barley peated to 309 ppm. Fifty-six percent of the spirit was matured in first-fill bourbon casks, while the remainder was aged in European oak wine casks. Barbecue smokiness on the nose, with wet peat and citrus fruitiness. On the palate, earthy peat, full-bodied red wine, and milk chocolate. Peat smoke to the fore in the finish, with ginger and chili. (GS, Spring 2018)

K&L Notes

Another bench mark peaty whisky, this time clocking in at 309.1ppm. We're not sure how they measure that exactly, but apparently it's the highest ever! The barley from this incredible whisky was harvested in 2010 and came exclusively from the Islay farm by the same name where farmer James Brown suffered extreme losses from the migratory geese and the exploding red deer population. Despite the low yields, the barley ended up registering unprecedented readings by the chemists after maltings in the Highlands. This number, however, simplifies the complexity of this special whisky to a single number, but doesn't do anything to elucidate the incredible depth they've achieved here. The majority of this batch was aged for 5 years in ex-bourbon barrels, while just over 40% was blended from a mix of ex-Paulliac, Ventoux, CDR, and Burgundy casks. Single farm, single field, single vintage, single malt and a singular experience. 18,000 bottles produced and bottled at cask strength, 61.2%.

I was surprised that this, one of the very peatiest malts in the world, was also so well balanced and long! The Octomore is the definitive concentrated Islay malt with texture and intensity to spare. The thing that makes this a special dram for me is the finish, it has a nearly Burgundian peacocks tail that spreads out, showing every different aspect of the meaty, smoky, salty, savory flavor that makes us all love Islay.
