2016 Mas Codina Xarel-lo Penedes

SKU #1327904

Produced from 100% estate grown, organically cultivated Xarel-lo, from their oldest plants (40+ years old), this is the taste of well farmed Xarel-lo: salty, with a touch of the ever-present fennel that grows wildly in the zone. The Garriga family, with Toni and Jordi currently at the helm, have been farming this land since the 17th century. While their cava is among our most popular sparkling wines in the store, it is absolutely worth emphasizing that their still wines are also incredibly well made and delicious.

Just totally blown away by the quality of this special little wine. Besides the astonishing fact that it's only $15 and made with great care - this wine is just FUN! The nose has incredible purity - subtle gravelly, hints of herbs, white pepper and exotic citrus. The palate is heavier than expected but not over weight. Perfect line of acidity keeps it all focused as the ripe yellow plum and pithy stone fruit softens the wild mineral quality. This could be high-end Saumur or something, but instead it's $15 flat Cava. I'm fully on board.

The nose is chock-full of stone fruits, full, and deep while it gives you a sense of depth. On the palate this wine shows serious weight, coupled with a subtle display of fruit but it’s the wine’s richness that takes center stage. The wine isn’t fat, nor does it have zippy acidity but it does have good balance and intriguing minerality. I really like this wine and it surprised me because I’m usually a very zippy acidity guy for whites but this wine has balance for its richness. I’d like to try it with a fuller bodied fish, sea bass or halibut.

Our star cava producer has a hidden talent- making great still white table wine at an awesome price! This dry, clean white wine has striking honeyed intrigue on its very long finish. It is structured very much like a good Pouilly-Fuissé, with some good mid-palate weight and great refreshing acidity. This would be a perfect partner with a big seafood paella!

Mas Codina has become one of our favorite Spanish wine producers for sparkling wine here at K&L. Their new venture into red and white wines has proved to be hits as well. In particular, this Xarel-lo is in my opinion one of the best values that we are currently offering. The aromas initially are marked by minerally and chalky notes, followed by unripe orchard fruits and lemons. On the palate, unripe apple flavors play with notes of white flower, bitter almond, and citrus zest and pith. This wine’s structure, and especially its racy acidity, make it wine so particularly pleasing. One of the best white wines company-wide for under $20

I love Spain for so many reasons, but perhaps the first and foremost is the plethora of incredible wine at obscenely low prices. The Mas Codina Xarel Lo is just such a wine. It's old school Catalonia. 5 months in barrels, a mix of chestnut and French oak, this wine has a touch of everything. It's extremely difficult to describe since it's a grape I don't have extensive experience with in dry, still whites. It's new and yet familiar. There is weight and gentle fruit, like a chardonnay, but great acidity and freshness like a chenin blanc. It strikes me as being excellent on its own and with food. I will have to take home 3 or 4 bottles to be sure. I am determined to press on and investigate. Fortunately I can do so without worrying about the wine budget!

As much as we love their cava and rosé cava, Mas Codina has really raised the bar with their table wines of late: their Cab is perhaps our most underrated Cab under $15, and this Xarel-lo is fantastic! Xarel-lo is an important component in the cava blend, and while it is increasingly popular when done as a still wine, there are not many versions that show the grape as beautifully as Mas Codina's. Bright fruits combine with salty minerality and a subtle almond note in this refreshing, easy to drink yet far from simple white. As much as I enjoyed this wine when I first tasted it last year with winemaker Toni Garriga, I have to say that it is absolutely singing right now. Very highly recommended!

Wow this wine was a show stopper at a recent staff tasting. Though I have long enjoyed Mas Codina's wonderful Cava this was my first taste of a still white from them. Native Xarel Lo grapes grown organically on clay / limestone soils make for a vibrant wine bursting with saline minerality, green and yellow tree fruits, savory lees and good phenolic cut. The extended elevage has given a boost and rounded edge to the texture of this wine that seriously over delivers on its price point. Something different, utterly compelling and utterly delicious.
