2007 Billecart-Salmon Vintage Champagne

SKU #1325360 94 points Decanter

Chef de cave Florent Nys calls 2007 'the www vintage: wind, warmth and water'. The balance of all three was just right to ensure top-quality fruit at harvest. This is a blend of 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay with 4g/l dosage. So although this is an extra brut style, the 5% vinification in oak casks, 10 years on its lees, and partial malolactic fermentation gives a creamy, toasty edge to the focussed palate. With flavours of hazelnut praline, lifted florals and real purity of peachy citrus, this is a complex, vinous Champagne that needs time to shine. (TG) (5/2018)

94 points James Suckling

A complex Champagne, the nose starts out with polished, toasted woody aromas, and hints of fresh mushroom, too. The palate delivers smooth lemon and peach fruits amid layers of spicy fresh field mushroom. Quite savory, dried lemon peel finish. (10/2017)

Jancis Robinson

75% Pinot Noir from Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and the Montagne de Reims and the rest Chardonnay from top villages on the Côte des Blancs. Dosage just 4 g/l but it doesn't taste at all austere. Deep green gold. Very tight bead and on the palate tense but fully ripe. Tastes much mellower than 4 g/l. Very successful. 17.5/20 (7/2017)

K&L Notes

This extra brut is the vintage offering from Billecart and is composed of 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay, entirely from Grand Cru vineyards.

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.

- The French region of Champagne (comprised of the towns of Rheims, Epernay, and Ay) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and winemaking traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range from the basic brut (often blends of several vintages), single vintage champagnes, and rose.
