2007 Don Q "Limited Edition" Single Barrel Rum 750ml (Previously $37)

SKU #1324998

The Puerto Rican rum Don Q has a history stretching back to 1865 but the brand only relaunched in the continental United States in 2006. The 2007 "Limited Edition" is only the second such special offering by the distillery and was aged for 10 years before release. One of the best values we've yet to see in the rum market, Don Q remains the most undervalued player in the Puerto Rican rum market. Distilled by Serralles Destileria in Ponce Puerto Rico, this brand is best selling rum in Puerto Rico. While this is traditional spanish style rum, it doesn't sacrifice on character at all. Rich and complex with a full body and plenty of rummy essence to balance out the oak. This is a drier style light rum and one of the very best Spanish style rums on the market at any price.

This is an easy to drink rum. It is very soft and pretty. The Don Q is on the light side with a delicate sweetness that is balanced and subtle. There is a nice elegant finish.

I don't write a ton of spirit reviews, but this is a deserved exception. This rum is going to make a lot of folks happy, both "rum," and "not rum," people alike. With a silky, soft finish that goes forever, it's an excellent bridge option for the whiskey crowd, with strong oaking notes and vanilla sweetness that will be familiar, but a rummy, banana, marshmallow core that'll keep purist happy. Great at a much higher price point, but phenomenal at this one .

Truly a deal that is too good to pass up, this "Single Barrel" should be in everyone's cart this summer. Classic, dry dark rum has grown increasingly expensive in recent years, and I for one am excited to see something so affordable and with such high quality. Vanilla, toasted spice, a hint of molasses and whiffs of coconut combine with caramelized brown sugar to create something much greater than the sum of its parts. Whether in a cocktail, with a large rock and twist of orange, or simply served neat, this always goes down a treat.

Initially I scored this a little lower on the nose but after revisiting over the course of ten minutes, I had to change my score. What was initially a single note turned into a revolving door of different aromas. From banana and Asian pear to burnt rubber, fresh struck match, charred brown sugar, nougat and toasted marshmallow, at some point I just had to stop as new adjectives kept rolling in. The palate is smooth and almost cooling with echoes of burnt rubber, hazelnuts, and caramel milk, with baked apple and chocolate on the finish. This would be a great mixer or just on the rocks on its own and a steal at this price.

Here's a good old fashioned closeout that everyone should take advantage of. We don't do a whole lot of Spanish style rum here at K&L. That's not because we don't like the style, but we feel that the few we stock offer a good cross section of the relatively homogeneous style. A few distillers in the category stand out from the pack and Don Q has always been one of them. It's Puerto Rico's best selling rum and has a long history of exceptionalism. That said their entry level stuff isn't exactly jumping off the shelves in California. But when I tasted the single barrel I knew we had to have it. There's no reason this shouldn't be worth $40 and we did sell it at that price for some time. But at $20, it goes from a good rum at an ok price to one of the best deals in the store from any category. This is "Single Barrel" in the Caribbean sense, meaning one make and barrel type without blending. It's just under 10 years old and is one of those rums you can literally do anything with. Sip it straight, it will appeal to bourbon guys or dark rum drinkers alike. Throw it on the rocks or with a splash of coconut water on a hot day, you'll plow through a bottle in an afternoon. Use it as a base for countless rum classics. It doesn't matter, this stuff makes everything taste good without tons of sticky sugar or caramel coloring. The nose is pure barrel spice, exotic candy, wild honey and maple syrup. The tiniest hints of rum funk let us know that this isn't Kentucky bourbon, but I bet some would have trouble guessing the genre by smell alone. The palate is packed with rich dark flavors of candied tropical fruit, turbinado sugar, chocolate covered raisin and baking spices, but unlike so many of the other light dark -that is to say column distilled, barrel aged- rums it doesn't turn cloyingly sweet on the finish. Instead a big drying oak builds to a pleasurable warming spice on the finish. It seems that the distillery decided to let this little rum speak for itself and for that we thank them. Unquestionably the finest rum deal in the store right now.

This tasty rum single barrel rum has incredible texture. It's rich and round texture steals the show. Aromas of burnt bannana, brown butter and sweet american oak melt into butterscotch on the palate. This aged rum is pretty dang delicious, easy drinking and incredibly smooth. This rum is so smooth, you could easily enjoy it straight, but also is an ideal candidate or any traditional tiki drink calling for dark rum.

This single barrel from Don Q is big on scents of brown sugar melted in butter, dark caramel, cinnamon, and clove. Slight tropical fruit tones emerge with overripe banana and grilled pineapple. There's a nip of spice on the nose, but this rum is really just a big softy and wants to be your friend. The palate has rich butterscotch and burnt caramel flavors like a roasted marshmallow. Again the spice asserts itself only briefly before toning back down and getting replaced by charred oak into a caramelized woody finish.

Oh, HELL yeah. "Elegant" isn't a word I'd usually use to describe a rum but I can't come up with a better one. This reminds me of a 10-year Cuban bottle I carried back from Mexico a few years ago. The nose on the 2007 Don Q has a Grand Marnier-like bass tone of orange peel that's generously dusted with cocoa and warm spice. The palate reverberates these flavors with tobacco leaf and a peppery impression that keeps the tones of tropical fruit and spice in a state of balance and restraint. It's still about the cane more than the barrel. I don't get the back-end confection that can put off people who prefer other brown spirits to rum. You could sip this from a snifter after dinner or make the most luxurious dark & stormy or mojito on a warm afternoon. Somehow they're not mutually exclusive.
