2013 Jonata "Todos" Central Coast Red Blend

SKU #1324855 95 points James Suckling

This is so complex and fantastic showing the complexity and drinkability. Full body, layered and gorgeous. Dried berry, dried meat and date. So subtle. This is mostly Syrah but hints of nine grape types from Sauvignon Blanc to Cabernet Franc. (1/2017)

The 2013 Todos Proprietary Red Wine is a smokin’ wine that’s made from 78% Syrah, 15% Sangiovese, 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Viognier, 1% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Merlot. Full-bodied, supple, elegant and concentrated, with impeccable balance, it offers lots of purple fruit characteristics, spice, dried flowers and underbrush aromas and flavors. It’s one of the more approachable wines in the lineup, yet it will evolve for a decade or more on its purity and balance. This Ballard Canyon estate pulls from estate vineyards, and the wines are made by Matt Dees, who's unquestionably one of the most talented winemakers in the central coast. The 2013s are all gorgeous wines that shows the more structured, age-worthy side to the vintage (which is the MO at this estate) and will benefit from short term cellaring. (JD) (8/2016)

I loved the 2014 Todos, and this kitchen sink blend of 47% Syrah, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, 3% Sangiovese and 2% Viognier isn't far behind the other cuvées in quality. Currants, black raspberries, toasted spice, earth and hints of herbs emerge from this medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated, textured beauty that has tons of to love. It will keep through 2024. The 2014 Todos is expressive, open and quite giving, all of which make it super-appealing, even in its infancy. There is good depth to the sweet red cherry, plum, licorice, menthol and floral notes, all of which meld together effortlessly. Medium in body and nuanced, the Todos will give readers a good look at the Jonata house style at a relatively affordable price. (AG) (9/2017)

K&L Notes

Winemaker's Notes: "More open and red in its profile than the dark and brooding Sangre. Constantly changing nose of strawberries, raspberry, pastis, sage, tobacco and grilled meat. Massive scoop of sweet red fruit/sweet cream on palate that quickly moves to savory cured meat notes. Remains fresh and charming and moves seamlessly to the chalky and coating tannins that emerge on the mineral-driven finish. Notes of Mexican chocolate. Tremendous life ahead."

I love this wine from Jonata as it really shows the quality of what is going on at this incredible estate. Todos meaning "everything" is a conceptual wine that is designed to capture the entire vineyard in one bottle by incorporating all the varietals that are planted here. Jonata's vineyard is the sandiest spot in Ballard Canyon a small AVA quickly becoming known as one of the best places to grow Rhone varietals in all of California. The blend is dominated by Syrah (78%) bringing rich dark fruit, muscular structure, smoky, meaty nuances and scorched earth. Other varietals seem to add some floral nuances, spice, and soft silky tannins to embrace that powerful core. A really complete, balanced and expressive wine. In 2013 Jonata sacrificed almost 75% of their initial fruit set in favor of keeping yields very low and concentrating the wines. This absolute dedication to quality is clear to see in this wine.

This is a wine that certainly has everything. Todos is an unexpected blend of Syrah, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauv, Viognier, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot and Merlot and all these components work together seamlessly. This wine is super complex with raspberries, strawberries, dark chocolate, cured meats and spices with balanced acidity. The is a great central coast offering worth every penny that can be enjoyed in the near term.

Jonata "Todos" is a Syrah based blend from a cool climate, single site estate vineyard in Ballard Canyon. Winemaker Matt Dees harvests prime Syrah and Sangiovese (yes, Sangiovese is 15% of the blend!) from the vineyard rich in Careaga Sandstone, allowing excellent drainage. These conditions in the vineyard create concentrated fruit and wine, obvious from first sight: A deep, opaque ruby core and magenta rim show the intensity of extraction. Aromatic hints of garrigue and baked granite give way to an ample, beautifully balanced palate with bright acidity and chewy tannins. Wild berry, cocoa powder and paprika notes are trailed by a refreshing spearmint herbaceousness.

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year.
Specific Appellation:

Santa Maria/Santa Barbara

- Santa Maria and Santa Ynez make up the two AVAs of Santa Barbara County, an area known for its natural beauty and temperate climate. The best grape-growing areas, however, are located on the very coastal reaches of these two appellations, and are cooled by ever-present fog and ocean breezes (it is even cooler and foggier here than Carneros!). As expected, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive while the more inland zones lay claim to Bordeaux varietals and some Rhône blends.
