2013 Wieninger Gemischter Satz Nussberg Alte Reben

SKU #1322633 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Although a traditional field blend from the well-known site above Vienna, you could put the ripe, aromatic and concentrated 2013 Wiener Gemischter Satz Nussberg in any Traminer tasting and it would show well. Rose petals, lychees, peaches, cloves, yellow-skinned apples and other spices on the nose open to a rich, full-bodied, powerful yet fresh and very mineral, elegant palate full of finesse with a good finish. The aftertaste is long and keeps the tension vibrant. This field-blend Nussberg is another great 2013 from Fritz Wieninger.

92 points Vinous

Smoky bouquet combines pink grapefruit, black pepper and wild herbs. Sumptuously rich and full-bodied but nonetheless light on its feet, showing pure flavors of nectarine and wet stone. Marked by spicy herbs on the palate, the lively 2013 Nussberg finishes with a refreshing noble bitterness that is captivating.

Jancis Robinson

(17.5 / 20) Pale gold with a lavish aroma of ripe yellow fruits, quince and herbs. Deep, rich and spicy on the palate. Spreads across the palate but with enough freshness to take it to a long finish. Complex and powerful in an oily mineral sort of way and a deep spicy finish. A top-notch classic Gemischter Satz ('mixed sowing', ie interplanted vineyard). Absolutely delicious.

K&L Notes

Importer's Notes: "Nussberg (meaning "walnut hill") is located in the 19th district and soars to nearly 1,000ft above downtown Vienna. Wines from the Nussberg tend to show greater richness than those of Bisamberg. One of Wieninger's top wines is the Gemischter Satz Nussberg Alte Reben, a 50-year-old plot of nine varieties based mainly on Pinot Blanc, Neuberger, and Welschriesling. It is, as Fritz likes to say: "Vienna in a glass." The grapes were picked by hand and processed together following the careful elimination of any botrytised grapes. A 3-hour maceration period was followed by gentle pressing with a pneumatic winepress. Fermentation took place in cooled steel tanks. After maturing for nearly one year on the fine lees, the wine was bottled. The wine presents itself with a very complex aroma of citrus fruits, yellow flowers, pineapple and sweet herbs with complex, spicy and mineral fruit. On the palate, lively with good acidity, plenty of power, presence and great length."

- Austria is a well-respected wine-growing region in Europe. Yet, even though they make about a third the volume of wine as Germany, not many of these fine bottles make it to the shelves of American wine merchants or restaurants. Lucky for us, their anonymity has translated into incredible value from simple, everyday whites to exquisite dessert wines. Austria shares many grape varieties with Germany—Riesling is king here, too. But the style of Austrian whites is much dryer and more potent. Grüner Veltliner is Austria's second-most-important varietal and makes whites of great versatility and pleasure.
