2016 Idlewild "The Bee-Flora & Fauna" California White Blend

SKU #1322102 89-90 points Vinous

The 2016 The Bee Flora & Fauna White is a blend of Muscat, Arneis and Cortese, with intense floral and tropical notes from the Muscat front and center. There is an impression of sweetness, also from the Muscat, but the 2016 is crisp, dry and refreshing. Drink this tasty white over the next year or two. (AG) (3/2017)

K&L Notes

Muscat Canelli, also known as Muscat Blanc or Moscato Bianco, is a wildly aromatic grape variety native to northern Italy. In this case it’s grown on volcanic soils in Lake County, giving the wine a wonderfully mineral drive. Arneis is another native Italian grape (here grown in Mendocino), and produces firmly structured, stony wines laden with minerality and herbal notes. It’s the perfect complement to the Muscat Canelli, and also plays well with the small amount of Cortese, which brings a fresh, citrus-driven acidity. From the winery: "54% Muscat Canelli (a.k.a Muscat Blanc, Moscato Bianco), 42% Arneis, and 5% Cortese. The explosive aromatics of Muscat Canelli fill the glass, but upon tasting the wine, the balance of the early take of Arneis shows the structural bones. The wine is highlighted by honey, wildflowers, wet stones, salty air, jasmine, and orange blossoms. The mouth feel is shaped like a narrow diamond: lean on the front, just a touch of oiliness and richness through the mid, and then racy and driving through the finish."

I'm a big fan of the Idlewild label, and Sam's work in general. This wine is no exception. It's a fun blend of Northern Italian varietals that is at the same time delightful, complex and unexpected. It's dry, but with a very expressive, aromatic nose. The palate is quite textural, with some leesy quality in addition to the peach, apricot and pear fruit. It would be an excellent food wine, but certainly drinks well all on its own.

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year.
