2013 Raymond "Reserve Selection" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1314335 92 points James Suckling

Very balanced and silky with lovely blueberry and black currant character. Full body, firm and silky tannins and a flavorful finish. Very drinkable now but better in 2018. (1/2016)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The generic 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Reserve comes from a mix of sites, ranging from Yountville in the south to Calistoga in the north, as well as some mountain vineyards, such as Atlas Peak. A blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc, it has a dense purple color and a beautiful nose of blue and black fruit, licorice, graphite and subtle toast. It spent 18 months in 100% new French oak and was bottled unfiltered. This beauty can be drunk now or cellared for another two decades or more. One of the iconic wineries of Napa, Raymond Vineyards has been resurrected from its moribund state by the charismatic Burgundian transplant, Jean-Charles Boisset. One of the more exuberant and dramatic personalities of the wine world, his vision for quality and pursuit of it can often get lost in his gregarious, almost excessively contagious enthusiasm. This is the strongest lineup yet from Raymond Vineyards, with Boisset creating his own version of single-sector wines from different microclimates within Napa Valley, all of them outstanding. One of Boisset’s achievements, in addition to quality, is that all of their vineyards are now farmed organically or biodynamically. (RP) (10/2015)

90 points Vinous

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is plump, juicy and forward. Dark red cherry, plum, mocha and spice abound in a generous, ripe Cabernet Sauvignon that delivers outstanding quality and value, especially considering the 22,000 case production. (AG) (10/2015)

K&L Notes

Raymond Vineyards is right in the middle of a full rebuild right now. This isn't one of those tear everything down and start over builds though as the charismatic and venerable Jean-Charles Boisset purchased the winery back in 2009 and kept the great vineyards, started farming them biodynamically and focused in on a return to quality and hospitality. (You have to experience the "Red Room" at Raymond at least once in your life!) The results of this rebuild are starting to finally hit the market and the 2013 Raymond "Reserve Selection" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon really shows off the new dedication of energy and money to the brand. This cabernet is definitely a fine representation of what a Napa Cab should taste like. With 2013 being a spectacular vintage altogether, this cab has a very good tannic structure. You can definitely sit on this bottle for the next 10 years (if not more) and it will still be drinking well. And at the current price point we're selling it, you can't go wrong. Napa cab drinkers should definitely stock up on this one.

The nose has a spicy element to it, nutmeg, cloves with hints of leather and bits of plum. On the palate the wine shows real balance, lively, not heavy but showing a supple richness. The flavors begin to blossom on the palate showing more fruit and hints of earth and leather. The finish is elegant, balanced and shows a real restraint, I like this wine a lot, just real straight forward honest Cabernet at a reasonable price point and this wine will age for several years while gaining complexity.,
Drink from 2017 to 2023

Points be damned, if this is not one hell of a Napa Cabernet! This is the perfect steak night wine! The very vibrant nose has the lustrous aromas of violets, fresh blackberries, dried fruits, red currants, which dominate the very first whiff on opening the bottle. Big, round, silky and smooth it slides down way too easy. Toasty notes and a supple minerality add great length to the finish. Fire up the grill but I would get two bottles 'cause the one bottle will be gone before the meat is on the table!

From the superb 2013 vintage this Cab dominated blend (91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Sirah, 2% Petite Verdot & 1% Cabernet Franc) is dense, inky in both texture and flavor and has the hallmark savor of the vintage. Bold and fleshy this is packed with warm clay, beef jus, whole cherry and sandalwood flavors while keeping a fine ribbon of licorice and tar riding under this high line. Priced right and drinkable now this is will be great in 5-7 years’ time or to stock the larder for the next 6 months.

Right off the bat, the 2013 Raymond Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon shows it’s going to be a sumptuous experience. Black currant shines on the nose while rich plum fruit shows more through the palate, balanced by an earthy olive note. There is some structure and spicy vanilla to the finish, but overall this is a rounded wine with a luxurious mouthfeel and a hit of oak. This Raymond "Reserve Selection" is easy on the wallet and even easier to enjoy.

Raymond has always been known for its well balanced wines, and the 2013 is no exception. The fruit while ripe and plump, is beautifully framed by the wood spices, and the notes of mocha, earth, and dark chocolate and olives. A beautiful wine at a great price indeed.

Impressed by this Raymond release! The concentration is extremely well balanced - the fruit is alive, but is retained by the structure. Plum, spicy oak, and blackcurrant tie this wine together. Would make a great pairing alongside a dry-rubbed meat.

Raymond wines always strike me as being very well rounded and supple. The 2013 is another winner from Raymond! Even more lush and fruit driven then the 2012, it is loaded with cassis, mocha, and hints of vanilla that linger on the finish. This is a great drinking Cabernet that can be enjoyed now!

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year.
Specific Appellation:

Napa Valley

- America's most famous wine region, which encompasses a varied geographical territory running about 20 miles long from the San Francisco Bay northward to the foot of Mount St. Helena. Napa's great diversity, both in terms of climate and terroir, has led to the creation of a number of smaller AVAs like Stags Leap District, Rutherford, Howell Mountain, Oakville and Mount Veeder, among others. Cabernet and chardonnay still reign supreme, but just about everything under the sun is grown in Napa Valley, in quality levels ranging from $2 jug wine to $500 a bottle California cab.
