 Similar in style to the hedonistically-styled Cuvee de l’Orée (especially when compared to the structured, mineral-laced l’Ermite), the 2014 Ermitage le Méal Blanc (aged in 10% new demi-muids) offers layers of celery seed, brioche, caramelized pineapple and citrus oil on the nose. Thick, rich, voluptuous and full bodied with a massive finish, drink this sensational white anytime over the coming two to three decades. Looking at the 2014 whites from Michel Chapoutier, these are gorgeous wines that show the suppler, more elegant style of the vintage, yet still have thick, unctuous textures that keep you coming back to the glass.  Pale gold. Vibrant, minerally and sharply focused on the highly perfumed nose, displaying an array of ripe citrus and orchard fruit aromas and deeper fig and honey qualities. Sappy and incisive on the palate; a vibrant mineral quality gives lift to the flavors of bitter pear skin, tangerine and honeysuckle.  A rich, enticing style, with creamed pear, melon and apple fruit flavors. Lightly toasted hazelnut and matchstick hints weave through the finish, with a mirabelle plum note lingering longest. Drink now through 2027. (JM)  (2/2017)

 Cask sample. Marsanne at very low yields. Heady, pungent, super-rich nose. Lightly reductive nose. Does this signify a little change in winemaking? Michel C says it’s a terroir effect. Super-crunchy fruit and a little chew on the end. Such is the weight that this wine seems more open at the moment than the Granits Blanc. Some limestone and loess. Floral and apparently a little sweet. 18/20 points (JR)  (6/2015)

- If you've ever enjoyed the white wines of France's Rhône Valley, then you've probably inhaled the intoxicating honeysuckle and almond perfume of Marsanne. Most often blended with Roussanne and, increasingly, Viognier, Marsanne adds body and perfume to the wines of St-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage and St-Péray. It also planted in small amounts in Australia and the United States, where California's Rhône Rangers have embraced it. Aliases include Ermitage, Hermitage Blanc, Marsana and Grosse Roussette.


- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. - Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
