2016 Zarate Albariño Rias Baixas

SKU #1311375 94 points James Suckling

A very deep, youthful nose that has so much more to it than the peachiness of most wines from Rias Baixas. Then comes a huge blast of mineral freshness on the palate and a long lemony finish. Drink now. (7/2016)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The grapes for the 2016 Zárate come from different vineyards—all owned by them and within one kilometer from the winery in the Salnés Valley—and all fermented separately and are kept with lees separate until January when they make the blend. In 2016 they harvested early, before the rains, and all wines have moderate alcohol levels. This is very clean, fresh and open, with primary notes, very young. It's a style similar to the 2015, with tension, good acidity and the granite sensation of freshness in the palate. (LG) 91+ (8/2017)

K&L Notes

Zarate is legendary in the Salnes sub-zone of Rias Baixas. They were the first to bottle single vineyard Albariños, highlighting different terroirs within the region. Their wines are always amongst the most linear, acid forward, and structured of Albariños, and we are thrilled that they are once again represented in the US and available for purchase. Absolutely classic wines from this top Spanish white wine D.O.

This wine is one of my favorites that I’ve tried recently. Grapefruit slices, accompanied with lemon zest and orange peel are what’s initially expressed from this Spanish white. A distinct sea spray and lily bouquet round out the nose. On the palate, this wine is crisp and refreshing; very adept mouthfeel that would be fantastic with an array of different seafood dishes. Citrus, ripe stone fruit, and salty mineral qualities come through as well. A fantastic expression of Albariño from Zarate!
