2016 Castillo de Vinas Blanco Rioja (Previously $15)

SKU #1311286

Castillo de Viñas is a label put together by our good friend María Alvarez for her Spanish Wine Exclusives portfolio of wines (many of which we direct import ourselves). The Castillo de Viñas white and rosé both come from a true maestro in the village of Cordovín, Honorio Rubio. Having quickly earned a reputation amongst staff and our more savvy customers for producing whites which recall the great whites of Lopez de Heredia, this bottling is a younger, fresher style, though one that still benefits from great terroir and winemaking, including a generous 6 months lees contact in tank prior to bottling. The result is a lovely white Rioja that is impressively dry, mineral and multidimensional.

White Rioja has quietly become one of my favorite wine regions, and this 2016 release from Castillo de Viñas helps to continue this sentiment. Aromas of Meyer lemon, white nectarine, and yellow apple play with a distinct mineral note. On the palate, oxidized apple and preserved lemon flavors are accompanied by saline notes. This wine possesses great structure and verve; making it quite the value for under $15

I've said it before, and likely will repeat myself many more times, but here goes: white Rioja is where it's at! There is something about the minerality, and acid forward personality of mature Viura vines, that makes it the perfect aperitive. This particular version is made by Honorio Rubio, who is one of Rioja's most gifted producers of white wines. It is bright, slight savory and salty, with a wonderful texture thanks to six months ageing on the lees.
