2016 Soalheiro Alvarinho Vinho Verde

SKU #1311129 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2016 Alvarinho, the regular unoaked "classico" from Soalheiro, comes in at 12.5% alcohol. This is a fine Classico, perhaps not quite up to the 2015, but pretty fine in its own right. This shows all the hallmarks of Soalheiro, fresh, clean and lively. It is a pointed wine that seems a bit on the lean side, but it is very tightly wound, utterly gripping on the juicy finish and perfectly focused. There is some of that invigorating green this bottling tends to have, too. Don't drink it too cold—if you do, the power just takes over. If you like them crisp and dry, with that laser-like burst of acidity, this is an easy choice at a nice price. Stock up—they age well, too. Drink now-2026. (MS) (4/2017)

From the northern Vinho Verde region of Monçao and Melgaço, this finely textured wine is young, although already delicious. Its texture brings out the minerality from the granite soil, giving the wine a zesty character. The fruit bursts out of the glass: delicious citrus and sliced apples and a great burst of acidity. Jancis Robinson

Gorgeous aroma of citrus - both lemon and lime - and grace notes of blossom, bay leaf and herbs - but fully ripe. Beautifully fragrant. On the palate, intense Alvarinho purity of ripe citrus and a dash of herbs. Intense and scented on the palate even with moderate alcohol. Benchmark Alvarinho from this sunniest of spots in the region and a very slight grip to the texture increasing the length. So vibrant. Great vintage for this wine - so pure and fresh and lingering. K&L Notes

Delicious as usual, this mouthwatering Vinho Verde is 100% Alvarinho based. A combination of ripe golden stone fruits and fruit cocktail aromas lead to a rich, yellow and gold-fruited palate. Rich and with real flavor authority, the wine still shows loads of freshness and a nicely dry finish, perhaps a bit more so than the ebullient nose might suggest. The grapes are organically grown in the Vinho Verde sub-region of Melgaço and Monçao on granite soils. This expressive, more serious style of Vinho Verde is delicious as an aperitif or accompanied by your favorite grilled fishes and shellfish.

- Although quite small, Portugal produces a great variety of wines ranging from light and fizzy Vinho Verde to hearty and tannic Port. Portugal is Europe's fourth-largest wine-producing region, and has been exporting its wine since the 14th century. The Douro Valley of Portugal is the original and current home for the world's finest Port. The valley spans from east of the city of Oporto all the way to the border of Spain and is the country's best known wine region. Lesser-appreciated DOCs like Bairrada and Dão area also emerging for their fine, rustic reds.
