2015 Umathum Zweigelt Burgenland (Biodynamic)

SKU #1310693

Importer's Notes: "Zweigelt is an immensely attractive grape. It has a bright fruitiness that is always appealing. Sometimes the grape can be made in a simple, refreshing style, a little like a village Beaujolais. At other times it can be made seriously, such as the Ried Hallebuhl from Umathum, and can compete with the best reds anywhere. Umathum makes it in several different styles. This wine is medium bodied, maybe not a profound wine, but a deeply satisfying one for a very fair price. As usual here, the wine is all natural yeast, biodynamically farmed and raised and aged in large neutral oak casks (fuder). It's peppery, but with a lovely cherry fruit entry. Vineyard is mostly gravel and rather stony. 2015 was an exceptional vintage, producing wines of perfect balance and good cellar potential. Ruby red, in the nose peppery with notes of dark cherry, smooth and balanced in its finish."

- Austria is a well-respected wine-growing region in Europe. Yet, even though they make about a third the volume of wine as Germany, not many of these fine bottles make it to the shelves of American wine merchants or restaurants. Lucky for us, their anonymity has translated into incredible value from simple, everyday whites to exquisite dessert wines. Austria shares many grape varieties with Germany—Riesling is king here, too. But the style of Austrian whites is much dryer and more potent. Grüner Veltliner is Austria's second-most-important varietal and makes whites of great versatility and pleasure.
