Distilled by Jose Cortes Santiago in 2000 from 10 year old espadin harvested entirely from the hillside behind the Cortes palenque before being rested for 17 years in glass at full strength. Jose is the family patriarch of one of Matalan's finest and most well regarded palenques and this was his final distillation before passing the torch. A unique expression of his life work, unmatched by an product on the market representing his legacy as well as the spirit of the Oaxaca. It should be consumed with reverence for this great man and wonder for the unique place from which it came.

I don't know what it is about aging mezcal in glass, but this is the second vintage espadin we've had and it's easily my new favorite spirit in the store. The nose is ultra complex showing tons of agave, deep pepper, gusano salt, but none of the bold carbonized smoke that mezcal drinkers are likely used. Instead expect a heady blend of smoked citrus peel, mesquite embers and earthy fruit. The palate is shockingly soft and filled with agave fruit, pointed by black pepper, roasted nuts, lemon and more salt. Very few spirits achieve this kind of complexity, while remaining so inviting and almost NONE that have not been aged in oak or otherwise rectified by the producer.
