2014 Knez "Cerise Vineyard" Anderson Valley Pinot Noir (Previously $47)

 Dark red and purplish hued fruits, wild flowers, mint, spices and rose petal notes meld together in the 2014 Pinot Noir Cerise Vineyard. The Cerise is deceptively medium in body, but it packs serious intensity. Expressive, floral-infused aromatics give the Cerise its inner sweetness and perfume, while beams of underlying tannin give the wine its shape. This is another superb wine from Knez. I was deeply impressed with these wines from Knez. According to winemaker Anthony Filiberti, naturally occurring low yields in 2014, along with less juice per ton than recent vintages such as 2012 and 2013, combined to produce unusually rich wines. Filiberti adds that sugars were actually quite modest, but that long fermentations gave the wines their their intense, rich textures. Some of you may remember the massive closeout deals we have done in the past like Havens and Thomas Coyne. Well, we're here to tell you we have another up our sleeve with Knez. The Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from Knez have long been staff favorites here at K&L since their first vintage back in 2009 and the wines have only gotten better since then. The Knez family owned 3 of the top vineyards in Anderson Valley, Cerise, Demuth and Knez Estate, and in late 2016 Kosta Browne bought the vineyards from the Knez family. Soon after the family decided that they wanted to get out of the wine game and have come to us to help them sell some of their remaining inventory. This has led us to truly incredible deals on a set of 2014 Anderson Valley Pinot Noirs from sites that will soon be unaffordable, impossible to get monopoles for Kosta Browne. Of the three Knez wines we have from the close-out deal, this is definitely my favorite. Cerise Vineyard was planted by Knez in 1995 with heritage and Dijon clones which produce smaller berries that result in rich, bold fruit flavors. The 2014 of bottling of Knez Cerise has elegant but intense dark fruit character with floral and cherry-cola flavors, finishing with grippy, dry tannin.

If you can get me a bottle of vineyard designated Pinot Noir for under forty bucks I'm pretty happy. If you're able to procure one for less than thirty, I'm your best friend! Notes of ripe wild strawberries, red plums, floral accents and an incredibly fine tannin solidify this wine as the best pound-for-pound Pinot Noir on the market right now. Opportunities like this simply don't exist anymore, which is why I'm going big on this one. Drink a few now, put a few more down for a while. These wines still have plenty of development ahead of them but won't last on the shelves very long, that's for sure.

Concentrated red fruit flavors of ripe strawberries and raspberries intensified by medium plus acidity and complemented by a nice savory salinity. The intense fruit is balanced by sweet baking spice with a hint of amaro-like herbs and black tea notes. Powerful, balanced, elegant and exactly what you want from a single vineyard, top appellation Pinot Noir, at a closeout price. It’s hard to argue with a value like this.

This wine is absolutely gorgeous and lives up to its "cherry" moniker from the Cerise Vineyard name. Lush flavors of sweet red fruit are balanced by great acidity, to the extent that your taste buds light up immediately from the combination. The wine is silky and soft on the finish, but it never sacrifices structure. This is a total beauty.

Cerise Vineyard has always been the jewel in the cap of Knez. Long sought after by wineries like Copain, Littorai, Siduri and Saintsbury this site has been one of the top producing sites in the Anderson Valley since the early 2000’s. So much so that the Pinot Noir producer at the top of the food chain right now, Kosta Browne, just bought the site for untold millions of dollars. The 2014 Cerise bottling shows off all of this pedigree and intensity with concentrated purple flower, subtle oak, mulberry and sous bois aromatics. That heady combination is a harbinger of quality to come with a dense, dark forest-y nature along with porcini mushroom, snappy plum, spicy licorice and hints of sassafras and rhubarb pie. Slightly compact now in its youth this unravels nicely with a decant now and will happily stock your cellar for 5-10+ years to come.

Pinot Noir

- One of France's most legendary grapes and the grape that earned Burgundy its reputation. The parent of varietals like Pinot Gris/Grigio and Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir is blue to violet to indigo in color with relatively thin skins, and it is said to have been cultivated in France for more than 2,000 years. At its best, Pinot Noir creates elegant wines that are filled with primary red fruit aromas and flavors while young, revealing with an array of secondary characteristics like earth, smoke, violet, truffle and game with age. The varietal is also known, perhaps better than any, for its ability to translate terroir, or a sense of place. While the best Pinot Noir still comes from Burgundy, it is being produced with increasing success in cooler climates around the world. In France, it is part of the trifecta of grapes that can go into Champagne, and it is also grown in Alsace, Irancy, Jura, Savoie, Lorraine and Sancerre. Outside of France it is produced under the names Pinot Nero and Blauburgunder in Italy's mountainous regions, as Spätburgunder in Germany and as Blauburgunder in Austria. In the US, Pinot Noir has found suitable growing conditions in the cooler parts of California, including Carneros, the Russian River Valley, the Anderson Valley, the Sonoma Coast, Monterey County, the Santa Lucia Highlands and Santa Barbara County, as well as in Oregon's Willamette Valley. In recent years, New Zealand has demonstrated its ability to interpret this hard-to-grow varietal, with successful bottlings coming from careful and attentive growers in Central Otago, Martinborough and Canterbury. Chile is also an up-and-coming region for Pinot Noir, creating fresh, fruit-forward, early-drinking and affordable Pinots from the coastal Casablanca Valley and the Limari Valley.

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.


- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year.
