2015 Domaine la Croix Belle "Champ de Coq" Côtes de Thongue Rouge (Previously $12)

SKU #1306657

Just outside the city of Montpellier lie the vineyards of La Croix Belle, a family owned and operated Domaine that traces it roots back to the region more than two centuries. Francoise and Jacques Boyer assumed contril of the property in the late 70s with an eye towards making clean expressive wines reflecting the region. A lot of replanting was done, yields were lowered and modern winemaking techniques and facilities were adopted. This eye for detail had delivered us some of the freshest and most compelling values of the season. The "Champ du Coq" is a blend of 60% Syrah and 40% Grenache. A nose of ripe berry and fresh cracked spices leap from the glass. This delightful red is perfect on its own or would be even better with a lamb stew.

This wine is in croix belle! In all seriousness, this Syrah dominated Languedoc blend, which also includes a lovely floral Grenache component, is a heady wine. Tart and Jammy black and red fruit aromas swirl from the glass in a waft of baking spices, while the palate is full and rich, with a lighter tannin structure than you might expect from a Syrah dominated blend. There is no skimping on fruit here, with a powerful raspberry, blackberry and dried currant component. A savory/sweet note that is almost like honey dances through the suspension. This is a beautiful companion to stews and braised beef dishes, with the necessary structure and lift to cut the fat, but with the aromatics to enliven an otherwise simple dish.

France

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.
