2015 Moulin de la Gardette "Tradition" Gigondas

SKU #1305917 92 points Jeb Dunnuck

Leading off the 2015s, the 2015 Gigondas Tradition is another beauty from this estate. Made from 80% Grenache and 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, brought up all in very old foudre, this textbook beauty boasts full-bodied richness and depth to go with classic street market-like aromas of tapenade, garrigue, exotic spices and saddle leather. It’s a textbook as it gets and will drink well for 10-15 years. ( (10/2017)

K&L Notes

Jean-Baptiste Meunier is the fifth generation winemaker behind the great property of Moulin de la Gardette in the Rhone region of Gigondas. We have been working with him since the mid-90s and the wines have always been some of our favorites from the area. The region itself has stepped out of the shadow of neighboring Chateauneuf du Pape, creating wines of intensity and flavor that are distinctly their own. Gigondas has more south facing slopes and higher elevations as well as varied soils that help distinguish the region. The "Tradition" is a blend of Grenache, Mourvedre and Cinsault from vines averaging an age of 40 years. It is aged for about 18 months in mostly used barrique before bottling. Jean-Baptiste Meunier has done it again! This is absolutely gorgeous and luscious but does not overwhelm the palate. What I love so much about his wines is the finesse and restraint he demonstrates while still retaining beautiful power and balance. When he was here earlier this year for our consumer dinner, he confessed to being a bit late because he really wanted to put his feet into the Pacific ocean before doing anything else. It's this same genuine honesty that is so evident in his wines.

I've had the chance to taste and/or drink this wine several times over the last few months and each time it has never failed to please and excite. First, during our Rhone trip, Alex Pross and I visited Gardette’s proprietor, Jean-Baptiste Meunier and in eager anticipation, tasted the wine both knowing afterwards this was going to be a huge success. Second, JB came to visit our LA store where we did an in-store tasting and consumer dinner afterwards. Consistently throughout the evening, every patron asked two questions - can I have some more wine to drink, please and when does the shipment get here? Finally, I tasted it this week with the LA staff, who flipped over it, and I finally have an answer for the previous questions. It's here and you can have as much as you want! At least for now... The 2015 Rhone vintage continues to excite and delight. The wines have a beautiful purity of fruit and concentration but lack the heaviness and headiness of the 2007 vintage. There is just so much fresh brambly fruit that I personally can't get enough. The Gardette is a benchmark producer for me and its appellation of Gigondas. It has the ripe fleshy black fruit, the savory white pepper and Asian spiced palate plus it finishes with the toasty garrigue notes so classic to the region. On every level, this wine is a success. It's one of the reasons Jean-Baptiste has become such a good friend to our stores and a great partner to work with. The wines always hits home runs regardless of vintage but in a vintage like 2015, it's a Grand Slam!

Moulin De La Gardette has been one of my most reliable "you have to try this bottle" wines. It's always shockingly good , beautifully expressive, and totally delicious. The vintage really takes this wine to a whole new level. The nearly perfect conditions in 2015 have pushed one of our most reliable producers to new heights. Gorgeous fruit, excellent concentration, and intensely structure make this a totally serious wine for both the dinner table and the cellar.

Always a favorite Rhone blend of mine, this 2015 vintage is remarkably on point! It has those deep brambly, blackberry flavors from 80% Grenache, with the classic garrigue/herb profile often found in great Gigondas. The depth of fruit is well balanced by refreshing acidity from Gigondas’ high eleveation, and the tannins are pronounced but well integrated. This would definitely benefit from some time in the cellar.

Everything about the 2015 Moulin de la Gardette is fabulous, from the gorgeously embossed bottle, to the classy front label, to the enticing aromas of blueberries and violets, to the delicate and intricate flavors on the palate, to the lithe and elegant finish. In summary, this is the perfect bottle of French red wine and it speaks to the beauty of Gigondas and Rhone wines on the whole when they're made with restraint and balance. It's the kind of bottle you bring to a dinner party that impresses the hell out of everyone, but for a price that makes complete sense.

It's always special when before you've even stuck your nose in the glass, you're struck by the intense color of a wine. This Gigondas pours with a deep ruby core promising intensity and a pale garnet rim eluding to the delicacy within. The nose does not disappoint. Wild cherries and ripe late summer brambles fill the glass. There is an herbal component to the nose that begs for this to be paired with a roast. On the palate the wine is lively and energetic. Intense purity of fruit combines all that was promised by the color and aroma. Rich ripe berries and herbaceous thyme and sage abound. The tannins are fine and dive into a long graceful finish. A splendid wine that will no doubt continue to showcase it's elegance for years to come.

Rhone Blends

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
